- From the French lapin ('rabbit'); the VIZ English localization renders the species as 'Lapins'. Fandom romanizes the katakana ラパーン as 'Lapahn'. The name is a straight loan of the French word for a domestic rabbit, ironized against the bear-sized carnivorous reality of the creature.

The Lapins are large, carnivorous, pack-hunting snow rabbits native to the mountains of Drum Kingdom (Drum Island / the Drum Rockies). They are first named on-page by Dalton in Ch. 133 p. 16 — “There are lapins on this side. They’re vicious flesh-eating rabbits. If you encounter a pack of them, it’s certain death!!” — and named again in Ch. 134 pp. 9-11 when Sanji mistakes their blizzard-shapes for polar bears and a snow-country man corrects him: “rabbits as big as bears with the quickness of rabbits that attack in packs.” They first appear on-page in Ch. 135 (the chapter is titled “Lapins”), pp. 4-6, dive-bombing the climbing Straw Hats. Regarded as the most dangerous animals on Drum Island.

- Ch. 138 pp. 8-10 — the pack switches sides and shields Luffy from Wapol’s pirates, positioning themselves between the pursuers and the fleeing Straw Hats (Sanji: “IMPOSSIBLE!! Lapins HATE humans!”; Luffy: “THANKS, LAPINS!! YOU SAVED US!!!”) — an early Drum-arc instance of a hostile species recognizing Luffy.
