Why this matters
Delayed-reveal compressed into a single chapter. The seed (the rhythmic butt-thumping, p. 2) and payoff (the avalanche, pp. 18-19) are both in Ch. 136 — a structural form Oda uses occasionally where the prop-tell and its mechanism-reveal are within the same reading-session, but separated by enough narrative distance that the seed is memorable before its mechanism becomes clear. This is the same compressed-reveal structure as the Dalton-Zoan reveal (also Ch. 136) — Oda is using the chapter as a delayed-reveal training-ground for the broader pattern.
Escalates the Lapin pack-predator install. Up to Ch. 135, the Lapins are characterized as pack-hunting, snow-adapted, bear-sized carnivorous rabbits (see Lapins Bear-Sized Pack-Hunting Rabbits Named). Ch. 136 adds the load-bearing capability: they weaponize the snow itself. The adapted-to-snow register graduates from can-move-in-snow to can-induce-snow-disasters — they are not just snow-adapted predators but apex-tier environment-weaponizers.
The avalanche-trap also doubles as a set-piece-engine for the Drum Rockies climb: the mountain itself is now coded as actively-hostile-to-trespassers (the Lapins make the snow itself a hunting tool), pre-loading the forward-canon Drum-arc set-piece sequences.
