Why this matters

Smoker’s introduction is the first Marine HQ-tier captain in the series — the Marine-tier escalation from East-Blue regional-base captains (Morgan, Fullbody, Nezumi, Pudding-Pudding) to Headquarters captains is canonized at this introduction.

The ‘White Chase’ epithet is the first in a Marine-officer color-coded naming pattern that later expands at Admiral-tier:

  • Akainu (赤犬, Red Dog)
  • Aokiji (青雉, Blue Pheasant)
  • Kizaru (黄猿, Yellow Monkey)
  • Fujitora (藤虎, Purple Tiger)
  • Ryokugyū (緑牛, Green Bull)

Smoker’s Shiroi-X (White-X) is the prototype. The pursuit-verb (chase / tsuihō) embedded in the epithet additionally pre-loads Smoker as Luffy’s chaser across Loguetown → Alabasta → Grand Line.

The smoke-emission from shoulders (page 14, SSSS~SS) is the first on-page Logia-class Devil-Fruit visual pre-load in the series. The fruit (Moku Moku no Mi / Smoke-Smoke Fruit, forward-canon-named in Ch. 99-100) is visually canonized but not yet named in Ch. 98 — the chapter installs the element-emission-as-DF-tell grammar that every later Logia-debut deploys.

Technique stack

  • named-before-shown: the epithet White Chase and the rank Captain, Navy Headquarters are delivered before the character acts on Luffy.
  • name-etymology: Shiroi Tsuihō (White Pursuit) — color + pursuit-verb encodes Smoker’s role.
  • visual-silhouette: the smoke-emission-from-shoulders silhouette is the DF-tell.
  • parallel-arc-structure: Smoker’s introduction is the prototype for every later Logia-debut and every later Admiral-tier color-coded-Marine.
