Summary
The morning after Morgan’s defeat at the 153rd Naval Branch. Word spreads that “Captain Morgan’s been defeated” and the townsfolk cheer the end of his reign of fear (p. 2-3). Ririka and Rika feed Luffy, Zoro and Koby at the tavern; Luffy announces in front of everyone that he is “headed for the Grand Line,” prompting Koby’s horrified speech that it’s “suicide” for a crew of two — but Zoro confirms he’s in because “the Grand Line is where the One Piece is” (p. 5). Luffy and Koby share a tearful exchange (“…but we’ll always be friends!!”). A Navy lieutenant arrives to politely but firmly expel the pirates from town (p. 8-9). Luffy almost outs Koby’s Alvida-ship past — Koby, panicking, decks Luffy across the table (p. 11-12). Luffy understands instantly: Koby is performing for the Navy. They stage a beatdown so that Koby can plausibly disavow them (p. 13-14). Luffy bolts shouting “catch us if you can!” — and Koby, alone with the lieutenant, declares “I’m no pirate!! I’m gonna be a Navy officer!!” The lieutenant accepts him as a recruit pending background check (p. 16-17). At the harbour Luffy and Zoro shove off; Koby races to the dock and salutes “Cap’n Luffy” with tears (p. 18-19). The entire Navy detachment reflexively salutes back — and the lieutenant docks them all a week’s dinner for “saluting pirates.” Closing caption: “Luffy and his first crewman (the former, infamous, demonic Pirate Hunter Zolo) set sail… neither of them realizing that they’ve made one serious mistake…” (p. 20). Open questions raised
- Why “one serious mistake”? The narrator’s tell on page 20 implies more than the surface gag (no navigator/cook). Worth tracking whether it ever gets a direct payoff or remains a stylistic wink.
- Who is the unnamed Navy lieutenant? He’s the de facto commander of the 153rd Branch post-Morgan and the man who recruits Koby. Background-check policy comes from him.
- Why does Zoro accept “we’re after the One Piece” so easily? His chapter 6 motivation was the World’s Greatest Swordsman title — joining the One Piece hunt is a free roll for him, but it’s offered as a one-liner here without explanation. Seed for later Zoro/Mihawk grand-line entanglement.
- Koby’s enlistment-vulnerability: Zoro’s “If they find out about your background, they won’t let you enlist” is set as a Chekhov rule. Does it ever fire, or does Garp’s patronage retire it silently?
