Chapter 571: The Execution Platform

Summary
Luffy charges the last obstacle between him and the scaffold — his own grandfather, Vice Admiral Garp, who refuses to step aside (“If you want to pass, you have to kill me first… Straw Hat Luffy!!”). A childhood flashback shows Garp raising both Luffy and Ace to become Marines. Unable to bring himself to truly attack Garp yet desperate to save Ace, Luffy drives a punch straight through him; Garp, torn between duty and family (“…you’re a father before you’re a Navy man, eh, Garp?!”), lets the blow land and goes down. Luffy bounds onto the execution platform. Boa Hancock flings him the key to Ace’s seastone shackles, but Fleet Admiral Sengoku reveals his power for the first time — swelling into a colossal golden Buddha — and unleashes a shockwave palm to destroy the platform along with everyone on it. Mr. 3, fighting beside Buggy, throws up a giant Candle Wall to shield Ace while Luffy deflects the blast with a Gum-Gum Giant Balloon. The scaffold collapses and explodes in a tower of fire; Marines assume Ace (powerless in his cuffs) is dead — until a tunnel of flame parts to reveal Luffy bursting through, reaching his brother.
