What we know

First full on-page explanation of the Vivre Card / “Life Paper” (Ch. 489, pp. 18-20), delivered via Lola and Nami:

• Origin — made by taking a nail clipping to “a certain shop,” which mixes it into a special sheet of paper.
• Indestructible to water and fire (“you can wet it or burn it and nothing will happen to it”).
• Homes to its owner — it physically moves/points toward the person it was made from, no matter the distance (“they’re drawn to each other… you can’t really tell the distance”); torn pieces all point to the source.
• Reflects the owner’s life force — it shrinks and burns as the owner weakens, vanishing at death (“the life force of the owner is also reflected in the paper”).
• Said to be found “only in the New World.”

• Ch. 159: the first such paper shown — Ace gives Luffy a “piece of paper” that “will bring us together again.” The mechanic is unrevealed then. See Ace.
• Ch. 489: the mechanic is explained in full and demonstrated on-page when Ace’s card is found scorched and shrinking (p. 20) — the life-force mechanic is shown active for the first time.
• Ch. 515: the homing property is demonstrated again, now off-screen from the rest of the crew — Luffy’s torn piece physically “moves” toward its source (p. 18), and he states the scattered Straw Hats “all have these pieces of paper so we can eventually find each other again” (p. 18). His piece (the Rayleigh reunion card from Ch. 507) survived in his old pants; “there was something written on it, so I kept it in case it was important” (p. 17).
• Ch. 522: Grandma Nyon re-states the mechanic over Ace’s card — also called the paper of life, it “shows its owner’s direction and vitality” and shrinks as the owner weakens (Ace’s is now a tenth of its original size) (pp. 10-11). Reinforces the shrink-with-life mechanic named Ch. 490; the shrunken card is what decides Luffy to break into Impel Down. See Ace.
