Summary

The Esperia flashback (West Blue, ~70 years ago) continues, telling young Brook’s origin. At 14, Princess Shuri — famed for her beauty — has defeated all five princes who came seeking her hand, declaring she dislikes weak men “or men who can’t play music”; her mother Queen Candelle is Esperia’s Battle-Convoy commander, and by present-day standards Shuri already commands the convoy at 14. In the palace gardens, the adult Brook (age 27), Esperia’s Battle-Convoy Commander, sings his signature “Bones” song for Shuri, who adores his music because it once saved her father. The chapter then rewinds: Brook at 11, a starving orphan from the Cello Port slum/trash dump, presses his face to the bars of a music school he cannot afford, then plays a homemade “violin” (a glass bottle strung with wire) and sings his crude survival songs (“we’re all bones when we die”). A grimy, tired stranger — actually Prince Reuven in disguise, sneaking out of the palace — befriends him, calls him “Bro,” and shares meals; Brook cooks him grasshoppers and frog seasoned with stolen curry powder. When Navy men in league with the Moulon Family drug-smuggling gang catch Brook (a “mule” they used) and beat him nearly to death for hiding their powder, Reuven’s true identity is revealed as Esperia’s prince; Candelle and the young Shuri arrive with the Battle Convoy, rout the Navy and capture the Moulon Family. Brook survives, wakes in Esperia Palace, and is taken into royal life — given barracks quarters, real instruments, and schooling. “We’ve got a new star in Esperia!!”

• Brook’s origin: a West-Blue slum orphan. Brook grew up starving in the Cello Port trash-dump district of Esperia — “dad and mom and little bro,” all skin and bones, eating toads and stolen food. Self-taught musician who built a “violin” from a glass bottle and wire (p. 6).
• Prince Reuven was Brook’s secret childhood friend. The grimy, curry-loving stranger Brook befriended at the dump (“Bro”) is actually Prince Reuven of Esperia, who snuck out of the palace in disguise to escape royal life; the palace panicked whenever he went missing (pp. 6–9, 12).
• Queen Candelle is a fighting monarch. Esperia’s Battle-Convoy Commander Candelle personally leads troops, routs the Navy, and is beloved (“She’s saved the kingdom from peril!”). Shuri is her daughter and inherits the martial line (pp. 2, 10–12).
• Shuri commanded the Battle Convoy at 14. By age 14 Shuri had defeated all five suitor-princes in combat and serves as a Battle-Convoy commander; she prizes strength and music in a man (pp. 2–3).
• The Navy/Moulon drug operation. Navy sailors were smuggling gangster drug-powder through the port using Brook as an unwitting “mule”; when they found only curry powder they beat him and planned to kill him. The World Government backs the Navy, making this a political matter for Reuven (pp. 8–11).
