Why this family matters (plot weight)

Ch. 616 reveals that the late Tom — builder of the Pirate King’s ship the Oro Jackson and the Sea Train — had a younger brother, Den, a Forest of the Sea researcher and shipwright on Fish-Man Island. The two “don’t look anything alike” — Tom a fish-man (“cofish”), Den a Bering Wolffish merman — which the chapter uses to illustrate fish-man/merman heredity: a child can resemble a distant ancestor rather than its parents. The brothers tie the Water-Seven shipwright lineage (and thus the Pluton-blueprint heirs) to a living relative on Fish-Man Island. See Fish-Man And Merman Heredity Atavism A Child Resembles A Distant Ancestor.
