Marine Commodore stationed at Navy Base 77. Introduced Ch. 75 pages 8-9, 13-14. White-haired, prominent stubble, double-breasted Marine coat with formal commodore-rank insignia, hands behind back. Commands a Navy patrol ship sent by the World Government to evacuate the surviving Gosa villagers. Honorable — refuses to bribe Arlong; engages despite seeing the stronghold. The chapter’s honorable-but-overmatched Marine register install.
Doctrine
- Pirate-as-warlord-as-end-of-civilization (page 9): ‘When a low dog of a pirate sets himself up as a warlord, it’s the end of civilization.’ Pre-emptive ideological framing of Arlong as illegitimate authority.
- Honor-over-tactical-retreat (page 9): ‘Will our honor allow us to leave it intact?’ — the engage-Arlong decision is unanimous among the crew.
- Authority-bluffing combat-doctrine (page 14): ‘I am Commodore Purin-Purin of Navy Base 77. We are an elite fighting unit, feared throughout the seas.’ — shot mid-dignity-speech (‘If you lay down your— ’). The chapter’s gag-register Marine defeat.
Name etymology
Purin-Purin (プリンプリン) = doubled-onomatopoeia for jiggly/wobbly (cf. purin プリン = pudding/custard). Comic-onomatopoeia-as-name. Pairs with the Ch. 75 SBS Fullbody-from-wine-tasting canonization — both names install in the same chapter as food-and-drink-onomatopoeia-as-Marine-name registers. The doubled-name structure echoes Oda’s Doflamingo-style doubled-name registers.
Narrative function (Ch. 75 install)
- Second Marine-mode reveal after Nezumi (Ch. 69, cash-corrupted). Pudding-Pudding is the honorable mode. The chapter installs the two-Marine-modes dichotomy: corrupt-pays-lives vs honorable-refuses-dies. The Arlong-economic-system captures the corrupt and kills the honorable.
- Installs the Marines-cannot-help-Cocoyasi arc-axiom: his ship is sunk by Arlong’s reef-engineered-maelstrom (page 17), forcing the arc-grammar of intervention-must-come-from-inside.
- Cameo-character: single-chapter appearance, defeated in the chapter that introduces him.
