SBS Volume 34
Davy Back Fight SBS — mostly joke-heavy. Notable: Robin’s Hana Hana attack-name correction, Super Sparrow Chuchun has teeth like Karoo, and Oda is honest about the anaconda-eye plot hole.
Q&A
Chapter 317, Page 30
Q (Anonymous Hope): Sorry to do this when you’ve been waiting in line first thing this morning to start the SBS, but don’t you think you ought to atone for insulting my Cinco Fleurs in Volume 32? SEIS FLEURS… CLUTCH! CIEN FLEURS… DELPHINIUM! Now then, shall we begin the SBS? A: Ugh…! I’m sorry… I won’t ever… call it… Chinko (penis) Fleurs aga… (Collapse!)
Q (Handaccho): I was shocked when I saw how clearly ripped Luffy’s abs are. Do you have ripped abs like Luffy, Oda-sensei? A: Why, of course I do. Seriously like, when I take my shirt off… it’s just insane. Look at when I slouch forward… See? There are three separate areas on my stomach, clear as day. What? Those are stomach folds?
Q (Naoko): Doesn’t anyone on Luffy’s crew fall in love? Will there never be a tale of on-board romance? (Sanji is an exception) A: But they do… They’re all in love… WITH ADVENTURE. (← good one)
Page 21 — Devil-Fruit classification (Logia / Paramecia / Zoan)
Q: What type is Foxy’s Slow-Slow (Noro-Noro) Fruit?
A: Foxy’s Slow-Slow (Noro-Noro) Fruit (Noro Noro no Mi) is a Paramecia (super-power) type. To explain the three-way classification: Logia (element) powers transform the body itself into something elemental. Zoan (animal) powers transform their holder into animals. Everything else is a Paramecia (super-power) type. However, there are Paramecia types that can transform the body too. technique/sbs-leak — see Nature of Devil Fruits.
Q: Is the fishnet-stocking-wearing male Franky Family member’s outfit your personal taste? A: That’s just fashion, not my personal taste.
Q (joke): The “Sexy-Sexy Fruit” would have been a good fruit for Luffy. A: (gag exchange)
Chapter 318, Page 50
Q: What is… a “believing heart”? A: Good question. The answer is something you’ll have to find yourself. It’d be easy for me to answer (← doesn’t know), but it’s important for you to find the answer on your own (← has no clue).
Q: Sanji sometimes says something about a “Brother Soul”, but what kind of soul is it exactly? A: It tastes like umeboshi. It’s a “Hey yo! Ain’t I the shiznit?!” “Hell yeah, brother, you’re slick!” “What the hell? No, YOU’RE slick, punk!!” “Yeah, I’m No. 1 in this town!” “Wahahaha”-kind of soul.
Q (Super Octopus): When Itomimizu’s Super Sparrow Chuchun eats food, does it grow teeth, like the Super Spot-Billed Duck Karoo?
A: Yes, it has teeth. Its favorite foods are Super Worms, Super Sharks, and Super Footballfish. technique/sbs-leak
Chapter 320, Page 90
Q (Jack Toshio): Even a weakling like me was able to turn into this in only THREE MINUTES!! I used to be treated like an idiot, but after seeing an ad for rumble balls in a magazine and trying it out, I became like this!! Now I’m the center of attention!! A: Hey (laughs)! The Rumble Ball is amazing! Why don’t we all go out and buy some today?!
Q (Kana-chan): On p. 80 of Volume 9, a man with a strange hairdo named Commodore Pudding Pudding (Purin Purin) of the 77th Marine Branch was introduced. Was he modeled on Purin Purin-chan from the 1981 anime “Tales of Purin Purin”? technique/sbs-leak
A: Wow, that takes me back. It wasn’t really a model, just a vague memory. It’s not as if I liked the show — it was a puppet show aimed at girls. My older sister liked it, but all I could remember was, what a dumb name and hairstyle. I’m guessing you saw a rerun and noticed the similarity.
Chapter 323, Page 150
Q (Naopi): I want to see Luffy try on all the wigs in the changing room on 2nd panel of p. 168 in Volume 33! A: Oh yes, all those mysterious costumes. I left that one up to my staff member Y-san, since that’s in his field of interest. He happens to be the father of one child who loves Sailor M**n very much. My workplace is a collection of freaks and weirdos.
Q (Kissa): In Volume 33, “Davy Back Fight!!” p. 152, what do peanuts have to do with “Peanuts Strategy”? A: I dunno… I tried using it in a sense like “coward”. For fun. It’s not like I’m making fun of peanuts. Peanuts from Chiba are yummy.
Chapter 325, Page 190
Q (Maria, Green Onion Bear): Would you care for some delicious green onion cakes? A: Awesome! [eats] Mmnn! I can hardly describe this wonderful harmony brought out by the taste of green onions and cream… munch munch (Collapse!) AMBULANCE BLARING
Q (Odacchi): In Chapter 277 of Volume 30, when Luffy is trying to escape from the giant anaconda, he opens up the snake’s eyelids — but how can he do that when he’s inside the eye? A: Yeah I know, that didn’t make any sense. Luffy! Come here! Luffy: What’s the problem? There’s nothing wrong about this. Wasn’t it funny? Oda: Yeah, I guess it was! That’s the key.
Q: Try saying Nami’s special attack “Tornado Tempo” (Torunēdo Tenpo) but insert “chi” instead of “te”. A: That’s TORNADO CHINPO. TORNAAADO CHINPO!! OK! See you next volume!! Oh, wait. Isn’t this… sexual harassment?
Notable canon-leaks
- First on-page statement of the three-way Devil-Fruit classification (p. 21): Logia (body → element), Zoan (body → animal), and Paramecia/Paramythia (everything else — “super-power” types, some of which can transform the body too). Foxy’s Noro-Noro (Slow-Slow) Fruit is classified Paramecia. Foundational world-building for the entire Devil-Fruit system; predates the in-story taxonomy exposition.
- Super Sparrow Chuchun has teeth (like Karoo) — extends the “Super animals” / unique-bird-fauna world-building convention.
- Rumble Ball confirmed in-world (joke ad gag) — Chopper’s invention has fictional commercial appeal.
- Davy Back Fight’s “Peanuts Strategy” naming is Oda free-associating “peanuts = coward”; no deep etymology.
- Oda admits the Vol. 30 anaconda-eyelid panel is a logic break, justifies it as Rule of Funny.
SBS reveals (cross-linked)
- Nature of Devil Fruits — first on-page statement of the three-way taxonomy (Logia = body→element, Zoan = body→animal, Paramecia = everything else, “some Paramecia can transform the body too”); Noro Noro no Mi classified Paramecia.
technique/sbs-leak - Foxy — Noro Noro no Mi confirmed Paramecia (super-power) type.
technique/sbs-leak - Itomimizu — his Super Sparrow Chuchun has teeth (like Karoo); eats Super Worms / Sharks / Footballfish.
technique/sbs-leak - Pudding-Pudding — the 77th-Branch Commodore’s name/hairstyle was a vague memory, not modeled on the 1981 puppet show.
