- Name meaning
- Two name-layers. (1) フランキー将軍 Furankī Shōgun = literally 'Franky Shogun/General' (将軍 shōgun = military commander-in-chief); VIZ inverts the word order to 'General Franky.' The vehicles-dock-into-a-humanoid-robot reveal (the Soldier Dock System combining the Black Rhino FR-U IV + Brachio-Tank V) is a deliberate homage to the Japanese super-robot / combining-mecha genre (Mazinger / Getter / sentai mecha), where component craft 'dock' into one giant robot — and 'General/Shogun' is a stock super-robot naming register. (2) The epithet 'Iron Pirate' is written with the kanji 鉄の海賊 (tetsu no kaizoku, lit. 'iron pirate') glossed with the English-loanword ruby アイアンパイレーツ (Aian Pairētsu) — Oda's recurring kanji-meaning-over-English-sound ruby technique; 'iron' fits both Franky-the-cyborg and the robot's metal body. (3) Its frame 'Wapometal' (ワポメタル Wapometaru) is a portmanteau of Wapol + metal — a real in-canon by-product the deposed Drum/Sakura king Wapol inadvertently invented with his Baku Baku no Mi while turning garbage into toys (cover story, Ch 0249), a shape-memory alloy; Franky credits Vegapunk for adapting it.

What we know
- Ch. 636: General Franky (the “Iron Pirate”) is Franky’s combination battle robot, formed by docking the Black Rhino FR-U IV (Thousand Sunny Soldier Dock Channel 4) and the Brachio-Tank V (Channel 5) — “Black Rhino FR-U IV!! Docking!!” → “Brachio-Head!! Change!!” → “GENERAL FRANKY!!”.
- Ch. 636: its frame is a shape-memory alloy Franky calls “Wapometal,” developed from Vegapunk’s technology over the two-year timeskip; Franky salutes the scientist: “Esteemed genius, Vegapunk! Your dream has come true!”
- Ch. 636: named techniques this chapter — Sword of the Pillager (“Franken”), General Watch-Your-Step, Shoulder Cannon / Franky Cannon, and General Weight.

Etymology
Confidence: high · full on-page name 鉄の海賊「フランキー将軍」 (Aian Pairētsu “Furankī Shōgun”).
- General Franky = フランキー将軍 Furankī Shōgun, lit. “Franky Shogun/General” (将軍 shōgun = supreme military commander); VIZ inverts the order to “General Franky.” The component-vehicles-dock-into-a-humanoid-robot reveal (Black Rhino FR-U IV + Brachio-Tank V via the Soldier Dock System) is a deliberate homage to the Japanese super-robot / combining-mecha genre (Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, sentai mecha), where craft “dock” into one giant robot — and “General/Shogun” is a stock super-robot naming register.
- “Iron Pirate” = 鉄の海賊 (tetsu no kaizoku, lit. “iron pirate”), written with that kanji but glossed with the English-loanword ruby アイアンパイレーツ (Aian Pairētsu) — Oda’s recurring kanji-meaning-over-English-sound ruby technique. “Iron” fits both Franky-the-cyborg and the robot’s metal body.
- “Wapometal” = ワポメタル Wapometaru, a portmanteau of Wapol + metal. Not a coinage of Franky’s: a real in-canon by-product the deposed Drum/Sakura king Wapol inadvertently invented with his Baku Baku no Mi while turning garbage into toys during his cover story (first shown Ch 0249 cover) — a shape-memory alloy that made him a rich toy-company CEO. Franky’s robot uses a Vegapunk-adapted version: “Esteemed genius, Vegapunk! Your dream has come true!” A cover-story-to-main-plot callback rather than a fresh name.
