- Name meaning
- From Greek Σφίγξ (Sphínx), by folk etymology tied to σφίγγω (sphíngō) 'to squeeze / strangle' — the Theban Sphinx strangled travellers who failed her riddle (an alternative derivation traces it to Egyptian šsp-ʿnḫ 'living image', i.e. the statue). The GREEK sphinx has a woman's head, lion's body and wings; the EGYPTIAN androsphinx has a man's head on a lion's body and no wings. Oda's Sphinx — lion body + old-man face, wingless — follows the Egyptian androsphinx form, fitting the Alabasta-Egyptian coding of its first appearance (Mr. 4's mount, 0172) and recurring as the Impel Down Level-2/3 stair-guardian beast (0529–0531).
Mythological lion-body, human-face creature. First on-page appearance: Ch. 172 p. 3, p. 8 — as Mr. 4’s mount/pet at Rain Dinners. First on-page active-combat-pursuit: Ch. 181 p. 11.
Profile
The Sphinx in Oda’s bestiary is a unique mythological creature drawn with a lion’s body and a human-face head; in Ch. 172 it appears in silhouette behind Mr. 4 at Rain Dinners (p. 3) and again on a cart (p. 8). In Ch. 181 it charges south under Mr. 4 in active-combat-pursuit of the south-bound Vivi-decoys (TARRUMP). The creature is not a Devil-Fruit-form — Mr. 4’s fruit is forward-canon the Inu Inu no Mi, Model Dachshund (a separate Zoan distributed to his weapon-pet Lassoo). The Sphinx is operationally Mr. 4’s combat-mount.
Origin / race-class unspecified in-chapter. Forward-canon: the Sphinx will be named (defer name-confirmation to next-chapter reader).
Etymology / coding
The Sphinx fits the Alabasta-Egyptian-mythological coding of the arc — sibling to the Royal Guard officer-roster’s animal coding (Pell = Horus-falcon, Chaka = Anubis-jackal). The Sphinx is the most iconic Egyptian-mythological guardian creature in real-world mythology; its appearance on the antagonist-side (Officer-Agent mount, not Royal-Guard) is a structural inversion of the Pell/Chaka pattern.
Etymology : name from Greek Σφίγξ (Sphínx), folk-linked to σφίγγω sphíngō “to strangle/squeeze.” Oda’s wingless lion-body / old-man-face design follows the Egyptian androsphinx (man-head guardian), not the winged woman-headed Greek Sphinx — consistent with the arc’s Egyptian coding. The Impel Down individual’s speech-gag (parroting noodle words Sōmen / Tanmen / Ramen / …Amen) is a Japanese -men (麺, “noodle”) pun, not part of the name itself. See etymology: frontmatter.
Appearances
- Ch. 172 p. 3, p. 8 — silhouette at Rain Dinners HQ; with Mr. 4
- Ch. 181 p. 11 — active-combat-pursuit charge under Mr. 4; with Merry Christmas
- Ch. 529 pp. 12-15, 19 — a second on-page Sphinx: the giant Impel Down Level 2 (“Beast Hell”) Guard Beast, the “Guardian of the Stairs.” Lion-bodied with an old-man face; mimics human speech, mostly noodle words (“Somen / Tanmen / Ramen / …Amen”, “Jyajya-men!”). Enraged by the “Prison Break Alliance” (Luffy + Buggy + Mr. 3), it smashes through the floor to Level 3. A distinct individual from Mr. 4’s Alabasta Sphinx — same mythic-creature class.
- Ch. 530 pp. 2, 7-14 — the same Impel Down Level-2 jailer Sphinx falls through onto Level 3 (“Starvation Hell”); captured in Saldeath’s sea-prism net alongside the “Prison Break Alliance,” it wakes and rips the net apart (“The Sphinx is awake!”, p. 13), freeing Luffy, Buggy and Mr. 3. Still a distinct individual from Mr. 4’s Alabasta Sphinx — confirms the Sphinx as a recurring creature in Oda’s bestiary.
- Ch. 531 pp. 15-18 — a Level-3 (“Starvation Hell”) jailer-beast Sphinx (lion-bodied, old-man face, fried-noodle-bun mane; labeled “SPHINX!!”, p. 18); Bon Clay subdues it (“Fight back, Sphinx!”) with his White Swan Arabesque (p. 16). Same mythic lion-body/human-face species as Mr. 4’s Alabasta Sphinx (Ch. 172), here repurposed as an Impel Down prison guard-monster.
