The theory

The community holds that Roronoa Zoro is a blood descendant of Wano’s Shimotsuki clan — specifically of the legendary samurai Ryuma — and that his East-Blue dojo hometown (Frost Moon / Shimotsuki Village) is the settlement founded by Shimotsuki émigrés who fled Wano, so that Zoro’s swordsman destiny is an inherited samurai birthright he himself does not know about. The reading was sparked at Thriller Bark (~2008–2010, Arlong Park / early r/OnePiece) by the Zoro–Ryuma “same face” mirror-duel and the shared black blade, surged when Wano confirmed Ryuma’s surname is Shimotsuki (= Zoro’s home village) and revealed the shared smith, and was finally locked by Oda’s Volume 105 SBS family tree — now the canonical citation across Fandom and the lore-channel ecosystem.

The steelman

The strongest form runs as a nested chain. First, the bridge: Zoro’s East-Blue village was founded by an émigré Wano samurai-smith, Shimotsuki Kozaburo — Kuina’s grandfather and the forger of Zoro’s own Wado Ichimonji, Enma, and Kitetsu III — and the village is on-page “built by pirates” and “named for the Shimotsuki,” flagged as no coincidence. On top of that bridge, Zoro is doubled with the Ryuma-Shimotsuki line more densely than any other Straw Hat: he carries Ryuma’s grave-sword Shusui, won in a flagged mirror-match against Ryuma’s animate corpse, and is twice named the “spitting image” of the Ryuma-descended Ringo daimyo Shimotsuki Ushimaru. The steelman then closes the loop with Oda’s own author’s-note: the Vol. 105 family tree that names Furiko (Ushimaru’s sister) marrying Roronoa Pinzoro, begetting Arashi, begetting Zoro — so the migration, the naming, the smith, the resemblance, and the blood all rhyme into a single concealed birthright.

The verdict

Mixed. The verdict follows mechanically from a wide split across the sub-claims: the central claim SC1 and the doubling SC2 both land as confirmed (0.95 / 0.87) on hard on-page and SBS beats, while SC3 — the specific named blood chain — is refuted (0.18) under a standing forward-dependence kill-shot. When the labels split two full rungs from the central claim, the rubric produces “mixed” regardless of the healthy centrality-weighted composite (0.738); the confidence is high because the load-bearing SC1 is near-airtight, but the headline the community actually markets does not survive.

What survives is a confirmed Wano→East-Blue Shimotsuki migration / naming / smith bridge plus a dense visual and thematic doubling of Zoro with the Ryuma-Shimotsuki line: Kozaburo, the émigré Wano smith who forged Zoro’s blades, founded and named his hometown and was Kuina’s grandfather; Zoro carries Ryuma’s grave-sword won in a flagged mirror-match; and Wano voices twice call him the “spitting image” of the Ryuma-descended Ushimaru. What falls is the theory’s load-bearing assertion — that Zoro is himself a blood descendant. The one source that would settle it (a Vol. 105 SBS tree) is absent from the corpus, Oda’s own SBS Vol. 101 states Ushimaru is not Zoro’s father, and the vault’s own payoff callouts hold the blood tie open with the confirmed descent line stopping at Kuina. Zoro’s surname stays Roronoa throughout. The surviving core is a resemblance-plus-heirloom-plus-village-naming web flagged as non-coincidental — strong, but not a proven birthright.

What would change our mind

Named, greppable falsifiers — one per line; future scoring passes grep these against new chapters:

• A main-story panel in which Zoro is stated or shown to be of Shimotsuki blood (not just village/dojo) — would flip SC3 and SC4 and raise the verdict toward confirmed.
• Any on-page appearance of Shimotsuki Furiko, Roronoa Pinzoro, or Roronoa Arashi inside the manga narrative (they are currently SBS/Fandom-only) — would move SC3 off refuted.

This pass re-decomposed the theory around its load-bearing pillar and re-ran the adversarial panel. The new central sub-claim is stated bluntly — Zoro is himself a blood descendant of the Wano Shimotsuki clan and of Ryuma, via the SBS Vol. 105 family tree (grandmother Furiko → grandfather Roronoa Pinzoro → father Roronoa Arashi → Zoro). Scored on its own, that central claim lands refuted (0.40) under a standing kill-shot, and because the headline claim is what the community actually markets, the current label follows it down to refuted.

What changed since ch. 1183

The frontier advanced to 1187, but nothing on-page moved this thread: chapters Ch. 1184, Ch. 1185, Ch. 1186, and Ch. 1187 carry no Shimotsuki, Ushimaru, Ryuma, or Zoro-lineage beat. The one material change is a source that arrived off-page. The original 2026-07-09 pass rated the central blood-chain kill-shot on the grounds that no Vol. 105 SBS note existed in the corpus at all. That note is now present (SBS Vol. 105, Ch. 1062 p.132) — but reading it does not rescue the chain, it hardens the refutation. Oda’s own transcribed Q&A prose names only the surviving leg: Furiko was on the ship from Wano, her younger brother was Ushimaru, “the descendant of Wano’s mythical samurai, Shimotsuki Ryuma… a very strange, twisted fate that even Zoro is unaware of.” The connective paternal spine the central claim depends on — Roronoa Pinzoro, Roronoa Arashi, Tera — appears nowhere in Oda’s words; the note’s own sourcing box concedes those names “live in the image” (a family-tree diagram) and were transcribed from Fandom character stubs, i.e. primary-adjacent, not a scanned authorial statement. So the kill-shot that was “the source is missing” is now the sharper “the source is present and, in Oda’s actual prose, silent on the exact chain” — an underdetermination/fatal standing against the central SC. Oda’s Vol. 101 p.168 hedge (“I’m debating whether to draw Ushimaru’s bloodline again or hide it, so I’ll put it on hold”) likewise keeps the reveal off-page and reservable, and the vault’s own guards (Ch. 1033 p.15; The Shimotsuki Name Links Wano To Zoro’s Lineage) still hold Zoro’s own blood tie open, with confirmed descent stopping at Kuina’s line.

What did not change is the strong periphery. The Wano→East-Blue migration/naming/smith bridge (SC2) stays confirmed on hard on-page canon — Ch. 955 (Kozaburo forged Wado and Enma, “broke the laws and left this land over 50 years ago”) and Ch. 1033 (the “old man of the village” is Kozaburo, Kuina’s grandfather; the village “built by pirates” and “named for the Shimotsuki”). The Ushimaru “spitting image” doubling (SC3, plausible) is on-page at Ch. 1023 and author-confirmed as deliberate, though the panel frames it as an uncanny resemblance rather than stated blood. The Shusui bookends (SC4, strained) happened — Ch. 462, Ch. 467, Ch. 954 — but on-page they are a merit-transfer and a theft-correction (Zoro is branded a “grave-robber” at Ch. 699), so the “heir reclaiming his forebear’s sword” reading is imported, not textual. And the negative correction (SC5, confirmed) is cleanly Oda-stated at SBS Vol. 101 p.168 (“Ushimaru is not Zoro’s father”), which relocates the tie sideways through Furiko rather than father-to-son.

Refuted follows mechanically: the load-bearing central claim scores below the 0.35–0.60 band’s floor at 0.40 with a standing kill-shot on its primary source, and refuted is defined as a central composite under threshold or a standing kill-shot on the central sub-claim. The healthy peripheral composites (SC2 0.90, SC5 0.93) keep the overall centrality-weighted number at 0.643 and are why the locked verdict remains the more generous “mixed” — but the thing the community sells, that Zoro is a proven Shimotsuki/Ryuma bloodline, does not survive its own primary source.
