Zoro Leopard Spinning Balls Reprise Restages The Enies Lobby Name-Ladder Layout
The seed

0417 p.11, middle and bottom tiers: the right-to-left name strip with the leopard-head aura in the centre, then the spinning-ball impact panel with ”…BALLS!!!” upper right and Kaku’s reaction on the right edge.
The payoff

1194 p.5 lower two-thirds over p.6 top half: the same right-to-left strip with the leopard head centred and facing left, the spinning ball, the opponent’s reaction on the right edge, and ”…BALLS!!” upper right.
What carries over and what changes
| Element | 0417 p.11 (Kaku) | 1194 pp.5–6 (Sommers) |
|---|---|---|
| Callout (VIZ) | “Three-Sword Style… / …Leopard… / …Spinning… / …Balls!!!" | "Three Sword Style… / Leopard… / …Spinning… / …Balls!!” (same words, same ellipses) |
| Strip order (right to left) | Three-Sword Style → Leopard → Spinning | Three Sword Style (+ CHOMP) → Leopard + Spinning |
| Leopard aura | solid black, lower left of the centre panel, jaws open, facing left | white outline, left of the centre panel, jaws open, facing left |
| Impact panel | bottom ~45% of the same page; spinning ball on the left, ”…BALLS!!!” upper right | split over the page turn: ball on p.5, ”…BALLS!!” upper right of p.6’s top ~47% |
| Opponent on the right edge | Kaku’s eye: “He’s flying toward me!!!” | Sommers’ face: “This guy’s too dangerous to leave alive!!!” |
| Result | the cut lands (p.12 “SLASH!!”); Kaku is stunned it got through | the cut takes a hand that grows straight back (p.6 “NYOOP / CRAK CRAK”) |
| Bandana | on throughout (p.11 top-tier close-up) | off; Zoro only ties it on at the end of the chapter (p.13, “FSH… TUG!!”) |
Per the vault’s chapter notes, the move is not used between 0417 and 1194, a gap of more than seven hundred chapters. (The etymology pass reached the same conclusion from the name: Ch. 1194 §Name etymology, 豹琴玉 Hyōkindama.)
Why this matters
The diagnostic. When Oda brings back a pre-timeskip named move after a long gap, check the layout, not just the name. Here he copied the original page: the name strip in the same order, the leopard head in the same spot facing the same way, the ball on the left and the opponent’s reaction on the right. A copied layout invites the reader to compare the two fights directly, and the meaning sits in what the copy changes. Against a CP9 agent the same move drew blood and ended an exchange. Against a covenant-immortal Holy Knight it severs a hand that regrows in the next panel. The page measures Zoro’s old ceiling against the new kind of enemy, and it is the setup for the chapter’s turn: plain swordsmanship no longer works, and only Supreme King Haki “infused” into the cut does (p.12, the hand that “isn’t coming back”). See Zoro Must Infuse Supreme King Haki To Pierce Sommers’s Steel Heart and Mihawk Teaches Zoro That Supreme King Haki Is A Sense Of Self.
The bandana inversion is the second detail to watch. In 0417, Zoro uses this move with his bandana already on, which is his “serious” state since the Baratie. In 1194 he uses it bandana-off and it fails. He ties the bandana on only after Mihawk’s “a sense of self” lesson (p.13), when black lightning first crackles on his blade. Inference, not stated on-page: the bandana is held back for the moment Zoro’s power stops working like his pre-timeskip moves.
Watch item (not claimed). The Enies Lobby Kaku fight ended on an opponent-perceives-a-demon beat (0417 pp.16–17: Kaku sees “a demon-god with three heads and six arms”, then the Asura splash). 1194 also ends on Sommers’ terror at a looming Zoro (p.13). The layouts differ (no apparition in 1194), so nothing is filed. If a later Sommers page puts a demon apparition over Zoro, read it as a second Kaku-fight quotation and check it against Zoro Asura Demon-Nine-Flash Composition Restaged From The Kuma War-Machine To The Dragon Kaido.
Technique stack
- panel-composition-quotation: the named move’s debut page layout is reused panel for panel after a gap of more than seven hundred chapters. See Panel-Composition Quotation Technique.
- visual-silhouette: the snarling leopard-head aura and the curled spinning-ball shape identify the move without its caption. The aura switches from black ink to white outline but keeps its pose and facing.
