Onigiri First Named Santoryu

The seed
Technique stack
- name-etymology — Onigiri puns on two Japanese words: oni-giri (鬼斬り, “demon-slash/cutter”) and o-nigiri (お握り, the rice-ball food). The pun is consistent with Oda’s food-named-attack pattern (later: Tatsu Maki etc.). The demon reading is the load-bearing one — Zoro’s combat identity is being named-as-demon from his first named attack.
- prop-tell — the in-mouth third sword is Wado Ichimonji, Kuina’s blade. The “demon” framing is bonded to Kuina’s sword from the first named santoryu attack. Every later “Onigiri” callback is a callback to Kuina. Cross-link Zoros Promise to Kuina.
- chekhov-explicit — VIZ footnotes the meaning. The reader is told this attack means “Demon Slash” on its first use. Oda is canonizing the demon-iconography for Zoro from the first santoryu attack, not stealth-seeding it.
- parallel-arc-structure — the demon-spawn framing was first applied to Zoro on-page in Ch. 5 (page 19). Ch. 17 is the technique-side canonization of the same framing. Two chapters in Volume 1 (Ch. 5 verbal, Ch. 17 visual) lock the demon-Zoro iconography in before any later arc gets to escalate it (Asura at Thriller Bark; King of Hell at Wano).
What this seeds
- Asura form — Thriller Bark. The first time Zoro manifests as a literal three-faced, six-sword demon. Onigiri is the embryonic version of the Asura visual: three swords, demon iconography. Asura takes the Onigiri-shape and pulls it backward into Zoro’s body.
- King of Hell — Wano. Enma’s haki-consuming corruption is the cost of going further down the demon-Zoro path that Onigiri opens.
- Santoryu attack-naming grammar — every later named santoryu technique inherits the named-strike-with-sword-in-mouth visual. Tatsu Maki, Tora Gari, etc. all follow the Onigiri template.
