The seed

Noland’s log (read via Mont Blanc Cricket) records “the sound that giant bell of pure gold made” tolling over ancient Jaya, with the bell drawn in silhouette (Ch. 230 pp. 2–3). Cricket couldn’t find the bell itself — only three bell-shaped gold ingots and a penguin statue fragment on the seafloor (pp. 4–5).

The payoff

(What it turned out to mean.) The bell did not sink; it rose with the City of Gold to the Sky Island, and ringing it is the literal payoff at the end of the Skypiea arc.

Why this matters

The “dialogue-from-dead-character” tag covers Noland’s voice (via his log) seeding the central artifact. This is the Jaya-side head of the single Golden-Bell chain that pays off in Skypiea; do not read it in isolation.
