“Whirl Spider Squard” · alive · Whitebeard-allied New World captain

Profile

Whirl Spider Squard,” one of the distinguished New World captains allied with Whitebeard, arriving at Marineford with the 43-ship allied fleet (Ch. 551, pp. 12-13): “These are definitely pirates aligned with Whitebeard!” His ship breaches the open Gates of Justice alongside Doma, McGuy, and the Decalvan Brothers. His own crew is the Whirl Spider Pirates.

Arc-by-arc updates

Marineford — the allied fleet arrives (Ch. 551)

Marineford — vanished from the bayside (Ch. 559)

Marineford — the tearful betrayal (Ch. 562)

  • Reappears at chapter’s end: professing lifelong devotion (“I dedicated my life to the Whitebeard Pirates long ago”), a sweat-soaked, tear-streaked Squard embraces “Pops” (“Squard!” / “Pops!”) then runs his sword clean through Whitebeard’s chest — the war’s first betrayal and Whitebeard’s first wound at Marineford (pp. 15-17). His grief-stricken face frames the act as deception rather than malice. See Squard Tearful Stab Manipulation Tell, Captain Squard Vanishes From The Bayside Before The War.

Marineford — remorse; the manipulation exposed (Ch. 564)

  • Breaks down in remorse once the manipulation is fully exposed: “Pops!! I’m sorry!! Ace!! I’m sorry!! …What have I done?! …when I love him so much!! …how could I have doubted Pops…” (p. 4) — confirming he was deceived, not a genuine traitor. See Squard Tearful Stab Manipulation Tell.

Marineford — the betrayal explained; Whitebeard’s forgiveness (Ch. 563)

  • The motive surfaces: his original crew was annihilated by Gold Roger himself, leaving him alone in the world and bitter toward Roger; Whitebeard took him in and he became one of Pops’s most loyal followers (p. 6).
  • The Marine “rebel” Akainu fed him a lie — that Whitebeard struck a deal with Sengoku to sacrifice the 43 allied captains in exchange for sparing the Whitebeard Pirates and Ace — and revealed Ace is Roger’s son, redirecting Squard’s grief into the knife (pp. 5-8). He cries “AOKIJI!!” as the Encirclement Wall of ice rises, seeming to confirm the lie (p. 9).
  • Decked by Marco (“They tricked you, Squard!!”, p. 9), then breaks down when Whitebeard forgives him with a headbutt — “You may be a fool… but I still love you” (p. 12) — and shatters the ice trap, proving the lie false (pp. 14-15).

Marineford — reappears in remorse; Whitebeard’s absolution (Ch. 572)

  • Reappears wracked with guilt for having stabbed Pops, willing to die to atone — his crew is identified on-page: “It’s the Whirl Spider Pirates!! Squard!!” (p. 12) as he rolls his ship in to help evacuate Ace and the breakout allies. See Whirl Spider Pirates.
  • Whitebeard absolves him (p. 14): “And you actually think that jab of yours hurt me?! …Everybody grows old and dies eventually” — closing the betrayal arc with forgiveness.

Notes

  • Allied New World captain (not a division commander). Crew = the Whirl Spider Pirates (named forward). aliases carry the romanization variants (“Squardo,” “Whirlwind Spider Squard”).
