Firsts
  • ARMORED ZOMBIE GENERALS: a higher tier of Thriller Bark zombie, 'completely different from the other zombies.' They don't feel pain and don't tire, and each was a powerful warrior in life — 'the head knight of a country, a fierce criminal, a legendary samurai, a pistol master' — 'made immortal' as a reanimated corpse. They can still 'malfunction' when faced with 'real fear' (pp. 9-12).
  • JIGORO OF THE WIND, a named Zombie General, fights using Zoro's exact technique (One-Sword Style: Thirty-Six Pound Phoenix) and voices Zoro's swordsman creed ('A scar on the back is a swordsman's shame!!!'), confirming on-page that this zombie carries Zoro's stolen shadow. His info-box: 'the legendary clumsy old man — a master swordsman who cut a swath through 1,000 pirates just to protect his family. (Perished at the age of 59.)' (pp. 13-14).
  • TARALAN, a named Zombie General 'Spider Monkey' — a giant spider with a grinning monkey's head — appears at chapter's end carrying a chained coffin (pp. 18-20).
  • LUFFY is trapped inside the chained coffin Taralan hauls; the group hears his voice ('Open the lid! Let me out!') and resolves to chase the spider zombie to rescue him (pp. 16-17).
  • FRANKY (in a stolen suit of armor) and Robin's group fight through a coliseum-like hall packed with Armored Zombie Generals; fire (Franky's flame breath) and Robin's 'Once Fleurs' are deployed, but 'all those attacks were ineffective against one of them' (pp. 2-15).

Summary

Inside Thriller Bark, Robin, Franky, Usopp, Chopper, and Brook push through a vast coliseum-like hall and run head-on into the Armored Zombie Generals — a far tougher class of zombie that feels no pain, never tires, and was, in each case, a feared warrior in life. Brook sings Franky a blues to steel his nerve; Franky, lost inside a suit of looted armor, trades blows with a sword-wielding general, while Robin and the others find their attacks shrugged off. The generals seal the corridor from both ends to trap them. One general, JIGORO OF THE WIND, suddenly fights with Roronoa Zoro’s exact sword technique and snarls Zoro’s own creed about a scarred back — proof the zombie is animated by Zoro’s stolen shadow. The group breaks through toward the courtyard, only to hear Luffy’s muffled voice begging to be let out of a chained coffin. The coffin is being carried off by TARALAN, a monstrous Zombie General “Spider Monkey,” who promises the pirates their end is near. Robin’s group resolves to give chase.

(None close on-page this chapter. This chapter demonstrates, rather than resolves, the shadow-zombie mechanic established earlier in the arc; the full payoff — shadows returned to their owners — lands later.)
