Name meaning
Japanese 陽樹イブ Yōju Ibu — 陽樹 yōju 'sun / sunlight tree' (陽 = sun, light, yang) + イブ Ibu = 'Eve'. Names the biblical first woman, deliberately paired with the 宝樹アダム Hōju Adamu ('Treasure/Jewel Tree Adam') from which the Thousand Sunny is built: One Piece's two mythic world-trees mirror Genesis' Adam & Eve (the Garden-of-Eden Tree-of-Life / Tree-of-Knowledge motif). The Adam = ship's near-indestructible frame / Eve = light-and-air-of-life pairing reads as a single creation-myth lineage for the world's great trees. Luffy/Usopp note the Adam↔Eve connection on-page (0612 p. 10-11).

Structural lore — the colossal light-bearing tree that makes the undersea Fish-Man Island habitable.

What we know

  • Ch. 612 (pp. 10-11): Fish-Man Island sits ~30,000 ft (≈10,000 m) below the surface yet is sunlit — the only place where sunlight reaches the ocean floor.
  • Ch. 612 (pp. 10-11): the light is delivered by the roots of the giant Sun Tree Eve, a “mystical tree that emits light from the surface”; its roots also breathe air down to the island. King Neptune notes the scientists have “complicated theories” about exactly how it works.
  • Ch. 612 (p. 11): when night falls on the surface it grows dark on Fish-Man Island too — the island shares the surface’s day/night cycle.
  • Ch. 616 (p. 10): in the Forest of the Sea (“Graveyard of Ships”) northeast of Fish-Man Island, “the blessed Sun Tree Eve allows the coral to flourish… and makes the fish and whales gather” — the tree’s light fertilizes the deep-sea forest, not only the city. See Forest of the Sea.
