- From Latin mantichorās ← Ancient Greek martikhórās, a transliteration of an Old Persian compound martīya ('man') + xuar- ('to eat') — literally 'man-eater'. The classical manticore has a human face, a lion's body, and a venomous scorpion/spined tail; Oda realizes the man-face + lion-body core literally as Impel Down's Level-2 speech-parroting Guard Beasts. Sibling mythic-creature coding to the Sphinx (lion-body/human-face) that guards the same floor's stairs and the Level-2 Basilisk.

Etymology / coding
Etymology : the manticore (Latin mantichorās ← Greek martikhórās ← Old Persian martīya “man” + xuar- “to eat” = literally “man-eater”) is the lion-body / human-face / scorpion-tail beast of Greco-Persian legend. Oda renders the man-face + lion-body core literally; the venomous scorpion-tail is dropped.
