Name meaning
Named for the Basilisk of European/Greek bestiary lore — from Greek βασιλίσκος basilískos, 'little king' (king of serpents), via basileús (king) + diminutive -ískos. In medieval legend the basilisk is a serpent-rooster hybrid hatched from a rooster's egg (synonymous with the cockatrice); Oda's on-page gloss 'a snake born from a chicken' maps directly onto that myth. Design realizes it literally: a giant serpent with a rooster head and feathered neck.

Profile

A guard beast of Impel Down’s Level 2 (Demonic Beast Floor / “Beast Hell”). Named on p. 3 of Ch. 528: “Guard Beast Basilisk — it’s called a basilisk, a snake born from a chicken.” Described as a rare mutant beast too dangerous for the outside world (it would eat people), so it is kept inside the prison. Depicted as a giant serpent with a chicken/rooster head and a feathered neck. Luffy defeats this individual with Gear Third (pp. 11–12).
