The seed
The crew’s first encounter on entering the Grand Line: a colossal living creature looms as a wall that dwarfs the frame, the Going Merry is reduced to a speck at its foot (beside the Twin-Cape lighthouse), and a single enormous ”…OM!!” (DOOM) SFX fills the upper negative space. The reveal beat is phrased as the shock of realizing a landmark is actually a living animal — verbatim captions “It’s no mountain!” / “It’s a whale!” This installs the “you have arrived somewhere that is itself a living colossus” establishing-shot grammar. The payoff
Arriving at Law’s destination, Luffy’s party meets the same composition: a colossal living creature rises out of the mist and fills the frame, the Mister Luffy Go is reduced to a speck at its foot (dead-center at the bottom, on the open sea), and a large “OOO/OM” SFX sits in the upper-left negative space — the exact slot the Laboon ”…OM!!” occupies. The reveal is again phrased as the shock that a landmark is actually alive: “IT’S AN ELEPHANT!!!” / ”…Is it… ALIVE?!” with the caption “Zou’s the name of the place that flourished on the back of an elephant.” The eye/face close-up on p. 17 (“…for an entire millennium?!”) confirms the looming mass is a single living animal. The voyage is bracketed by two living colossi: Laboon guards the Grand-Line entrance, Zunisha carries the island at its New-World far end — both introduced with the identical “tiny-ship-at-the-foot-of-a-looming-living-mountain + huge SFX overhead + ‘it’s a [creature]!’ caption” grammar.

This is the re-pointed establishing-shot grammar: where the Laboon-silhouette note tracks Oda redrawing Laboon’s own body (X-scar + lighthouse + verbatim line) to do body-memory work tied to Laboon, this note tracks the layout itself — colossal-living-creature-mistaken-for-landmark, ship dwarfed at the foot, SFX in the upper void, “it’s a [creature]!” caption — migrating to a new creature to mark a new threshold. The composition does the thematic work before any dialogue: the moment the reader sees a ship dwarfed at the foot of a looming living mass with the SFX overhead, the Laboon body-memory primes “this place is alive, and it matters to the deep lore.”
Watch-for heuristic: when the crew reaches a major new destination and the establishing splash puts the ship as a speck at the foot of a looming mass with a big SFX in the upper negative space, expect the “landmark is actually a living creature” swerve — and expect that creature to be load-bearing for the Void-Century / ancient-history thread (Laboon’s island-whale lineage; Zunisha’s millennium of walking).
