Why this matters
The Whisky Peak install combines two foreshadowing techniques in a single chapter beat:
- Name-etymology: Whisky Peak is alcohol-coded; Baroque Works front-businesses recur with alcohol / cocktail names. The naming pattern itself is a Baroque-Works tell.
- Warning-as-foreshadowing: Crocus’s don’t-trust-them warning, delivered with personal-knowledge cadence (cf. Crocus Roger Crew Affiliation Pre-Tell), is a diegetic spoiler — the warning is itself a structural marker that the town is unsafe.
The combination is dual-encoded: the name signals the affiliation, the warning signals the threat.
Forward-pattern
- The Baroque-Works-alcohol-themed-town-name convention extends across the Alabasta saga (Rainbase / Spider’s Café).
- The warning-from-trusted-elder-against-friendly-strangers technique recurs: Crocus’s warning is the prototype for Mama-Saur (later) / Itomimizu (later) / etc.
- The trap-town with welcoming-townsfolk-who-are-actually-agents reveal lands at ~Ch. 107-109.
