The seed
The “Mark-Mark curse” — “He can hit any target he aims at” (p. 9) — and the homing Rose Axes (Vander Decken IX hurls one at the princess and it curves back when it misses, p. 3) define Shirahoshi ’s ten-year confinement to Shell Tower . Decken refuses skin contact (declines a handshake, p. 16) — a tell tied to a touch-to-mark mechanic. Vander Decken IX spells out the full scope: “the moment I touched you, you became my target… I can throw anything anywhere and it will seek out its target,” it follows “even to the depths of hell,” chases through water, and he can mark two targets at once (one per palm). His right palm has been locked onto Shirahoshi for ten years — the curse that confines her, restated as the scene puts the homing lock in motion (she leaves the castle for the first time in a decade). When a villain narrates the exact mechanics, range, and limits of a power in this much detail, it is loaded for a payoff bigger than the immediate scene.
Ch. 616 — the curse tracks the escaped princess
Vander Decken IX throws a marked piece of coral — “Come on, Coral! Fly to Shirahoshi!” — which flies away from Shell Tower (“It’s not going to Shell Tower!” ), demonstrating the Ch. 0615 Mark-Mark Curse is still locked onto Shirahoshi and proving she has left the castle (p. 17). The homing power becomes a live tracking tool now that she is loose.
Ch. 618 pp. 7-10 — the curse hunts her in the open
Vander Decken IX confronts the fleeing Shirahoshi in person, proposing marriage and trying to kill her in the same breath, having thrown weapons at her “for ten years” (pp. 7-8). He attacks while still bound (“He’s still tied up!” , p. 10) — the visual tell of the marking/homing-projectile power: he marks a target and anything he throws pursues them, which is why his hands must be restrained.
Aboard Noah , Vander Decken IX complains his thrown weapons keep being deflected by “that blasted straw hat,” so he resolves to “just smash everything” with a “brilliant idea.” Escalation seed: the bigger the object he marks and throws, the more total the destruction his Mark-Mark homing curse can deliver.
Ch. 638 pp. 2-3, 9-12, 19 — the curse as the arc’s load-bearing kill-mechanism
The Mark-Mark curse — planted as a weekly-axe nuisance — is now the arc’s load-bearing climax mechanism: Decken has marked the colossal ark Noah and aimed it at Shirahoshi , turning the largest object on the island into a homing projectile that “cannot miss” and relentlessly chases the fleeing princess through the open sea. The single-point-of-failure limit is put on the table when Hody Jones asks “If you die… what happens to the ship, Decken?” and strikes him (p. 19).
Ch. 639 p. 3 — the curse turned on an ally
Decken’s homing curse is shown wielded offensively against an ally for the first time: he marks Hody Jones by touching him with his left hand (p. 3). Hody states the curse’s removal limit aloud — “If you die here, the effects of your power will wear off…” — re-arming the mark/mark-removal mechanic for the arc climax.
Ch. 640 pp. 16-19 — a new limit surfaces
The curse becomes existential: Decken throws the entire ark Noah at his locked target Shirahoshi and re-aims it onto the island, vowing “I’m gonna be on your trail until the day you die… and it’ll be me that kills—”. New limit shown — the homing holds only “as long as he’s got a sliver of consciousness left,” so KO’ing Decken is the counter.
Ch. 641 pp. 2, 5 — the curse weaponized the ark, confirmed in reverse
The curse is shown scaled to the ark itself: Decken ’s KO releases his hold on Noah and it falls; Shirahoshi pleads for him to “set your target on me again,” confirming Noah was being steered as a homing weapon aimed at the princess.
Ch. 645 pp. 10-13 — the curse-as-island-killer discharges in motion
The Decken-curse-as-island-killer thesis discharges in motion: Noah , dragged toward the island, is met by Luffy destroying it mid-fall (Elephant Gatling) to keep it off Fish-Man Island — “I’m not letting the ship hit the island!!” Partial — the curse’s final resolution and the ark’s nature remain forward.
