The Government Was Shipping The Stolen Gum-Gum Fruit Twelve Years Ago
Status: pending · Technique: chekhov-explicit
The seed
Who’s-Who reveals that 12 years ago the World Government was transporting the Gum-Gum Fruit on a guarded government ship , and that it was stolen — the loss sending Who’s-Who, its CP9 guard, to prison. The fruit, an apparently-ordinary rubber Paramecia, was valuable enough to the WG to ship under escort, and it is the very fruit the Straw Hat (now Luffy ) ate. A loud chekhov-explicit seed that the Gum-Gum Fruit carries a hidden significance the World Government has been guarding/seeking.
Ch. 1018 p. 7 — the thief is named: Shanks’s crew
Who’s-Who ’s grudge “is against the man who stole the Gum-Gum Fruit from us… Red-Haired Shanks ,” and the fruit + straw hat are “things the boy Luffy ] inherited from him.” Identifies the Ch. 1 “enemy ship” theft as a theft from the World Government , escalating the chekhov-explicit seed that the WG attached extraordinary value to this “common” rubber fruit.

Why this matters
A villain-exposition chekhov-explicit seed: the World Government does not guard, ship, and imprison agents over a common rubber fruit. The detail retroactively recolors the fruit’s Ch. 1 origin (taken “from an enemy ship” by Shanks ’s crew) and pre-loads that the Gum-Gum Fruit is something the WG has actively tracked.
