Katakuri’s full childhood backstory lands: mocked as “the pelican eel” for his ripped, sharp-toothed mouth; when he beat up the bullies they took revenge by scarring his sister Brûlée ’s face; blaming himself, he vowed to “make them fear my perfection!!! I’ll show no weakness!” — the etiology of both the hidden mouth and the “perfect man” persona.
Across the Whole Cake Island arc Katakuri has worn a scarf covering the lower half of his face in every appearance — a persistent wardrobe/prop tell that something is being concealed beneath the curated “perfect man” image.
Ch. 883 pp. 6, 10, 12 — the scarf hides a ripped mouth; he eats alone so it is never seen
Katakuri retreats from the duel for his daily merienda because no one has ever seen him eat — “nobody’s ever seen Master Katakuri in the act of eating ” (p. 6). The chefs venerate him as cold, proud, and flawless (p. 11). Caught mid-meal by Luffy , his scarf is down: behind it is a huge ripped, jagged shark-toothed mouth stretching ear to ear (pp. 10, 12) — “So, you caught a glimpse… of how I look when I eat!!!” The hidden mouth is the crux of his constructed persona and points squarely at an unrevealed backstory of shame.

Ch. 893 pp. 11-14 — Katakuri bares the mouth himself; the shame goes public
Later in the same duel Katakuri , refusing an interference-tainted win, deliberately bares his hidden fanged mouth to the entire spectator gallery — “If you’re going to laugh at that idiot… then laugh at me too!!!” (p. 12). His self-proclaimed #1 fan Flampe recoils, calls him a monster , and vows to photograph and broadcast the “hideous face” across Totto Land (pp. 13-14). The wardrobe/prop tell is now fully public — yet the reason for the lifelong shame (his childhood backstory) is still withheld.

Katakuri’s true face is revealed — the ripped, fanged mouth he hides — and his reaction proves how deep the shame runs: he attempts to murder his own loyal pastry chefs for witnessing it (“Forgive me for not seeing your death through!!”, p. 13; “No one who has seen my true form can live!!! ”, p. 14), impaling them with Edged Mochi . Why this matters
A textbook wardrobe-foreshadow / prop-tell : a single never-removed garment (the scarf) silently promises a concealed truth, and Oda pays it off at the precise dramatic moment the “perfect” antagonist is most exposed. Parallels Crocodile’s hidden mouth-scar as another mouth-concealing antagonist whose covering hints at a buried past — the same “the cover hides the wound” structure that humanizes a fearsome enemy.
