Dragon - name foreshadows Celestial Dragon inversion and WG-rebellion

The seed
The payoff
The name Dragon operates on TWO converging layers:
Layer 1: Apex-creature semantic theft. The World Government’s nobility is the Tenryūbito (天竜人, Celestial Dragons) — the descendants of the Twenty Kings who founded the WG ~800 years ago. Dragon is their reserved epithet. The WG’s banner / coat-of-arms / World-Noble-class identity all hinge on the dragon claim. By naming the Revolutionary Army’s founder Dragon, Oda has him steal the apex epithet from the very faction he opposes. Dragon’s forward-canon epithet Hangyaku no Doragon (反逆のドラゴン, Rebel Dragon) makes this explicit — the rebellion’s flag is built into its founder’s name.
Layer 2: D.-clan apex-stack. Forward-canon (~Ch. 432+): Dragon’s full name is Monkey D. Dragon. The triple-stack of Monkey (Luffy’s family-of-fighters) + D. (the WG’s hereditary enemies, per the 2026 Davy reveal) + Dragon (the WG’s reserved nobility-title) registers as a maximal-stature claim. Every component of the name is in direct semantic opposition to the WG.
Why the name itself is the seed
The Ch. 100 reveal gives the reader only the name (plus a silhouette, a wind-blast, and one doctrinal line). Everything else — the Revolutionary Army, the Celestial Dragons, the D.-clan, the WG’s overthrow plot — is yet to come. The fact that Oda chose Dragon as the bareword for the man who will overthrow a faction whose god-tier rulers are called Dragons IS the foreshadowing. The name pre-loads the entire arc-of-arcs.
A reader at Ch. 100 cannot yet know about the Celestial Dragons. But they can register the power-tier signal of the name Dragon and pair it with the wind-blast (elemental-tier combat-feat). The name installs the apex-creature-tier register in advance of any data justifying it.
Earliest known caller
Fan-consensus from publication of Ch. 100 (~2000). The full semantic-theft reading required Celestial Dragons to be introduced (Sabaody, ~2008-2009) to fully crystallize; pre-Sabaody, the reading was Dragon = apex-tier power signifier only.
Why this matters
The Ch. 100 silhouette-named-debut is the prototype for the entire named-before-shown technique that Oda deploys at higher and higher narrative stakes (Mihawk, Whitebeard, Yonkos, Imu, Joy Boy, Rocks, eventually Davy Jones himself at Ch. 1164). The lesson:
- A name is a power-tier signal even with no character behind it. Smoker’s surprise-tone + the bareword Dragon is enough to install power-tier.
- A name that semantically conflicts with an established faction’s identity is doing political work. Dragon vs. the Celestial Dragons IS the rebellion. Watch for names that steal epithets from antagonist factions.
- Hooded-silhouette + named-on-page is Oda’s signature install register for forward-canon major characters. The list of Ch. 100-grammar debuts: Dragon (Ch. 100), Mihawk (Ch. 41 named / Ch. 50 shown), Imu (Ch. 906 silhouette), Joy Boy (Ch. 628 named / Ch. 1114 shown), Davy Jones (mooks-vernacular Ch. 33 / named-king Ch. 1164).
