Domi Reversi's Name Encodes Imu's Domination Doctrine
Status: pending · Technique: name-etymology / chekhov-explicit
The seed
The name reads on two sourced layers:
- Latin — domi (locative of domus, “at home” → “homeward”) + reversi (perfect participle of revertor, “having returned”) = “returned home”: the covenant “brings targets home” under Imu’s dominion. Domi also puns on dominium/dominus (“lordship / master”).
- Board game Reversi (a.k.a. Othello) — core mechanic: flip the opponent’s pieces to your own colour. The covenant literally flips warriors to the caster’s side — a whole-board colour-swap of allegiance.

Why this matters
Oda routinely front-loads an ability’s true nature into its name before the doctrine behind it is spoken aloud — cf. Killinghams Name Encodes His Kirin Devil Fruit (Kiringamu → 麒麟/kirin, named before the fruit was) and Saturn’s Reversi Domino Compels a Victim to Destroy Their Own Bloodline (Saturn’s “Reversi Domino” @1163 = the same “Reversi” reversal-family, turning a victim against their own bloodline).
