The Morgan family is the first corrupt-Marine family unit Oda depicts — a tyrant father and his entitled son. Their dynamic prefigures other dysfunctional power-family pairings Oda will explore across the series:

The Ch. 4 scene of Morgan punching Helmeppo for the first time is the inflection point — the moment second-hand entitlement collides with the actual brutality it depends on. Helmeppo’s later redemption arc as a Marine recruit alongside Koby traces back to this beat: he was raised to be Morgan but, in the moment he’s ordered to kill a little girl, refuses. The first character-revision arc Oda will run on a villain.
