The Straw Hats are also a captain-with-tall-tale-dream + crew-that-believes-the-dream structure. Luffy’s “I’ll be King of the Pirates” is exactly the same speech-shape as Usopp’s “PIRATES ARE COMING!” — a claim that requires faith to act on, and a crew that acts on the faith.
Oda stages the Straw Hats’ shape in miniature-parody form here before the Straw Hats fully crystallize. The same technique recurs:
- Foxy Pirates (Long Ring Long Land): a proto-crew with a captain whose claim is theatrical and dubious; structure mirrors and exaggerates the Straw Hats.
- Spade Pirates (Ace’s flashback): Ace’s pre-Whitebeard crew — a captain-with-dream structure that Whitebeard absorbs.
- Heart Pirates (Trafalgar Law’s crew): a small specialist crew whose loyalty pattern mirrors the Straw Hats.
