Firsts
  • Bluejam Pirates
  • Luffy's rubber body is confirmed on-page in the flashback — Porchemy: 'The Devil Fruit… looks like this one's for real.' / Luffy: 'I ate the Gum-Gum Fruit.'
  • Ace and Sabo have been stealing and saving money for FIVE YEARS to fund their dream of becoming pirates, hidden in the Middle Forest between Mt. Corvo and Gray Terminal.
  • Ace and Sabo rescue Luffy; Ace fights Porchemy with the pirate's own cutlass and defeats him ('If I lose to a kid… I'll hang up my cutlass!!'). Porchemy is humiliated before his crew ('I'm sorry, Captain Bluejam').
  • Foosha Village
  • Luffy's core wound voiced: 'I got nobody else!!' / 'I don't want to be alone! I hate it more than being hurt!' — the reason he endured torture rather than betray Ace; he asks Ace to need him and to stay alive.
  • Ace's dialogue 'What if Gold Roger had a kid?' (p.14) — dramatic irony; Ace is unknowingly Roger's own son (already revealed on-page at Marineford).
  • Sabo introduced as a full member of the trio — Ace's best friend, forced to flee Gray Terminal, comes to live with Ace at Dadan's; the boys swear they'll all be hunted by Bluejam's crew now.
  • Dadan shown taking the boys in: 'I'm giving you a place to stay, so earn your keep!' Her bandit subordinates Dogura and Magura are named (p.17).
  • Closing seed: a 'big shot' — the Celestial Dragons — is coming to the Kingdom of Goa, making front-page news read by both the Bluejam gangsters (p.1) and Dadan's bandits (p.17).

Summary

Entirely a childhood flashback. On Dawn Island’s Gray Terminal, the Bluejam pirate Porchemy has captured seven-year-old Luffy and tortures him for a full day to learn where Ace and Sabo hid the money they stole from the Bluejam Pirates. Luffy — already a Gum-Gum rubberman — refuses to talk even as Porchemy beats him near death. Ace and Sabo finish relocating their five-year treasure cache and arrive in time; Sabo cracks Porchemy’s skull and Ace finishes him with the pirate’s own cutlass, vowing to “hang up his cutlass” if he loses to a kid. In the aftermath Ace, furious that Luffy nearly died for him, demands to know why Luffy didn’t just talk; Luffy breaks down — “I got nobody else!! I don’t want to be alone!” — and the two bond. Sabo, having fled Gray Terminal, joins them under the mountain bandit boss Dadan, completing the ASL trio. The chapter closes on both the Bluejam gangsters and Dadan’s bandits reading the same newspaper: a Celestial Dragon is coming to the Kingdom of Goa.
