- Name meaning
- エクストル / Ekusutoru = English 'extol' (to praise highly / glorify; Latin extollere = 'to lift up'). A pointed name for the money of a sky theocracy: the currency of a people who 'extol' their kami, and whose money is literally 'lifted up' (Latin tollere = raise/elevate) above the Blue Sea. Written like the Belly (B with a stroke) but with an E. Pegged 10,000 extol = 1 berry.
Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about this. Mysteries (unsolved questions) live in
Vault/Threads/; this is what the world IS.
What we know
- Ch. 242 p. 6: The extol is Sky Island currency. The exchange rate is 10,000 extols = 1 berry (Robin canonizes this on-page).
- Worked examples this chapter: entry fee 1 billion extols/person = 100,000 berries/person; the crew “should’ve just paid the original fee” of 700,000 berries total (7 billion extols); the ten-times penalty is 70 billion extols = 7 million berries.
- First on-page conversion bridging the Sky Island and Blue Sea economies — establishes the two worlds use different but convertible money.
- Ch. 241: “Extol” first named as Skypiea’s currency unit (conversion rate to Berry not yet given). See Skypiea Entry Fee and Criminal System.
Etymology
エクストル / Ekusutoru = English “extol” — to praise highly, to glorify (from Latin extollere, “to lift up,” ex- + tollere “to raise/elevate”). A pointed name for the money of a sky theocracy: it is the coin of a people who “extol” their “kami” (the heaven-worship pun the arc runs on — cf. Heaven’s Gate, “Godland,” the “angel” Skypieans), and money that is itself literally “lifted up” — elevated above the Blue Sea, just as the Latin root means “to raise on high.” On the page it is written like the Belly (the ฿-style stroked letter) but with an E instead of a B, signaling a parallel-but-separate economy. Pegged at 10,000 extol = 1 berry.
Confidence medium: the English “extol → praise/lift up” reading is strongly supported by the word and the arc’s theme, but is not SBS-confirmed. Sources: One Piece Wiki — Belly (Extol section, エクストル / 10,000
peg); Merriam-Webster / etymonline (extol < extollere “lift up”).
Chronology / structure
The extol is named in Ch. 241 (entry fee = 1 billion extols/person); the conversion rate to the Blue Sea berry is canonized one chapter later in Ch. 242 when Robin does the arithmetic during the White Beret confrontation.
