The theory

A long-running fan inference from the legacy One Piece theory forums — the Arlong Park Forums (~2008 onward), later “solved” and expanded on Worstgen, then mainstreamed on r/OnePiece and YouTube breakdowns — that Monkey D. Dragon, leader of the Revolutionary Army and father of Luffy, must be a disillusioned insider of the World Government’s Navy rather than a mere outside agitator. The idea circulated for years off his name (the World-Government-coded “Dragon” epithet), his parentage as the son of Marine hero Garp, and the Marine Smoker recognizing him on sight at Loguetown. The strong form: Dragon served in the Navy, was present at the God Valley Incident, and his time inside the system he now inverts is the origin of his revolution.

The steelman

The strongest pre-confirmation version ran like this: Dragon is the son of Marine hero Garp, and in One Piece the default path for a hero’s child is enlistment. Dragon’s very name is the World-Government-coded apex epithet (Celestial Dragons, the WG banner), which reads as semantic theft by a man who once stood inside the system he now inverts. At Loguetown, the Marine Smoker recognized Dragon on sight and treated his intervention as out-of-character, presupposing Dragon is known to Marine high command, i.e. a former insider rather than a mere outside agitator (Ch. 100). Forum analysts on Arlong Park and Worstgen triangulated a roughly 27-28-year-ago departure window from Vegapunk’s Ohara-era scene, Akainu’s hoodie redesign, and Garp’s greying hair, arguing Dragon and Sakazuki lived the same moral crisis and split in opposite directions (Absolute Justice versus total rejection). The punchline: only a disillusioned insider who saw the World Government’s crimes from within would build an army whose sole purpose is to overthrow it.

The manga has since vindicated this near-completely. Ch. 1097 p.12 states outright that Dragon “spent some time in the Navy” but “couldn’t find any of the Justice they wear on their backs.” The God Valley flashback then shows him there in person: a caption reads “Navy Sailor Monkey D. Dragon” as he refuses to shoot civilians and abandons the mission (Ch. 1159 p.7), and he later commandeers ships to rescue the human-hunt captives at gunpoint against his own side (Ch. 1165 pp.11-12). A subsequent Navy-HQ cell scene (“I’m quitting the Navy, Dad… I’m disgusted with you!!”) strongly reads as Dragon defecting to Garp’s face (Ch. 1166 p.16), though that specific identification is not yet locked on-page. What began as an inference from Dragon’s name, parentage, and Smoker’s recognition is now confirmed canon: Dragon was a Marine, and God Valley radicalized him.

• SC1 rebutted: neither attack contradicts SC1; both skeptics grant it survives. A caption and the character’s own mouth are as on-page as evidence gets. (Circumstantial corroboration the skeptics did not use: Ch. 100 p.18, Smoker recognizes the hooded Dragon on sight and by name.)

The central claim (SC1) — Dragon served in the Navy/Marines before founding the Revolutionary Army — is settled on-page twice over: his own words at Ch. 1097 p.12 (“spent some time in the Navy… couldn’t find any of the Justice they wear on their backs”) and the Ch. 1159 p.7 caption “Navy Sailor Monkey D. Dragon,” with no contradiction anywhere in the corpus. The kill-shots the skeptics landed all fell on the theory’s causal spine and its identifications, not on its biographical core: they killed the exclusive “God Valley CAUSED the revolution” claim (SC3, vault-flagged pending) and the locked “the cell-scene IS Dragon” identification (SC4, vault-flagged inference) — but the central sub-claim carries a 0.95 composite with an explicit on-page beat and zero surviving fatal/serious attacks against it, and the centrality-weighted composite lands at 0.828 with contradictions = 0, so the label follows mechanically to confirmed.

What survived: the biographical thesis — Dragon is an ex-Navy man who was present at God Valley and could find no Justice in the Marines. What fell to strong/fatal attacks: the strict causal reading that his God Valley tenure is the depicted origin of the revolution (the manga poses this as an open question and decouples the “no Justice” line from God Valley by ~8 years), and the confirmed identification of the “I’m quitting the Navy, Dad” cell-scene speaker as Dragon (the vault holds it as an inference only). What would change our mind

Named, greppable falsifiers — one per line; future scoring passes grep these against new chapters:

• A future chapter naming the Ch. 1166 Navy-HQ cell-scene speaker as someone other than Dragon (e.g. an on-page caption identifying a different young sailor) would refute SC4.
• An on-page reveal that Dragon’s “spent some time in the Navy” line is retconned, non-literal, or refers to something other than Marine service would strike at SC1.
• A depicted origin scene for the Revolutionary Army that explicitly locates its radicalizing cause elsewhere than God Valley (e.g. wholly in the Sorbet Kingdom / King Bekori enslavement beat, or the burning Gray Terminal) — with God Valley named as unrelated — would cap SC3 at “one input among several” permanently.

Why: the composite 0.828 sits below the rubric’s own confirmed ≥ 0.85 gate. confirmed has no alternative route (unlike refuted, which admits a standing kill-shot), so the numeric gate is dispositive. 0.828 lands in the plausible band (≥ 0.60, no surviving fatal) — a strong reading, just not a certified one.

2026-07-29 — correction. Locked verdict unchanged; verdict_current restored plausible → confirmed, reversing the 2026-07-25 banding audit for this note. No evidence was re-judged and no score was recomputed.

Why: the 2026-07-25 audit applied the rubric’s confirmed ≥ 0.85 gate to the theory-level confidence (0.828). That gate is a per-sub-claim banding rule — it decides each sub-claim’s label from the judge medians. The overall verdict is then derived from the sub-claim labels: the central claim’s label carries, unless every sub-claim lands confirmed (→ confirmed outright) or a non-central label splits ≥ 2 rungs from the central (→ mixed). The theory-level confidence is a centrality-weighted mean reported alongside the verdict — no composite gate exists at theory level.

Applied here: SC1 (central) is confirmed (0.95) — its composite clears 0.85 with zero surviving fatal/serious attacks and two independent explicit on-page beats (Ch. 1097 p.12 “spent some time in the Navy”; the Ch. 1159 p.7 caption “Navy Sailor Monkey D.
