The theory

The community claim, in its strong form: Sir Crocodile was born (or once lived) as a woman, was changed into a man by Emporio Ivankov’s gender-altering hormone power — the “weakness” Ivankov holds over him — and is secretly Monkey D. Luffy’s biological mother.

The theory grew out of the Impel Down arc. When Ivankov taunts that he knows Crocodile’s “weakness” at Ch. 540, fans on Reddit’s r/OnePiece and YouTube theory channels (crossposted from earlier venues like Arlong Park and the One Piece Wiki forums) read the gender-changing power-wielder holding a career-grave secret as the secret itself. It first appeared as attributable chatter around 2009-2010, then revived as a perennial “Croco-Mom” meme-theory from roughly 2017 onward, re-boosted every time Oda drew an androgynous or female Crocodile or dodged the parentage question in interviews.

The steelman

One Piece has deliberately hidden Luffy’s mother: Dragon is confirmed as his father and Garp as his grandfather, yet across 1000+ chapters and every databook Oda has never named, drawn, or referenced Luffy’s mother — an omission the series treats as too large to be accidental. The theory latches onto the one dangling thread that could fill that hole. At Impel Down (Ch. 540), Ivankov — a Revolutionary commander who wields the gender/hormone-changing Horm-Horm power — recognizes Crocodile and taunts that he knows a “weakness” grave enough that its mere threat instantly buys Crocodile’s cooperation. The most parsimonious reading of a hormone-user holding a career-ending secret over a proud man is that Ivankov’s power is itself the secret: Crocodile was once a woman.

From there the steelman completes the arc: a former female Crocodile, tied by the shared Revolutionary orbit to Dragon, could have borne Dragon’s child before transitioning — explaining both why Luffy’s mother is a total blank and why an otherwise pure egotist inexplicably shields Luffy at Marineford, driving Akainu back to protect the unconscious boy. In this reading the “secret Ivankov keeps” and the “missing mother” are the same withheld payoff, primed for a late-saga reveal.

The verdict

Refuted. The label follows mechanically from the central claim: SC1 — the premise the whole theory rests on — carries a standing kill-shot and scores a composite of 0.25, and the rubric refutes any claim with a standing kill-shot or a sub-0.35 central composite. What actually survives is narrow and honest. SC3 holds cleanly: Luffy’s biological mother is a genuine, deliberate blank — Dragon is the confirmed father (Ch. 432, Ch. 558), Garp the grandfather, and the mother is never named, drawn, or referenced, an omission sharpened by Oda naming and drawing Ace’s mother Rouge in the same arc (Ch. 550, Ch. 551). That establishes a real reserved negative space — but only that a slot exists, nothing about who fills it.

Everything that bridges the open slot to Crocodile fell. The gender-change premise (SC1) rests on an admitted-unresolved “weakness” the vault’s own note rates “fringe,” plus a headline SBS Vol. 92 artifact that does not exist where it is cited; the cheaper reading of the buried past is the fully drawn male-Crocodile origin in SBS Vol. 78, with no gender change and no child. The Ivankov-secret-equals-gender inference (SC2) is a coincidence of one panel, not a stated fact. And the payoff (SC4) is a pure future-reveal actively undercut at Marineford, where Crocodile’s only stated motive is killing Whitebeard and he shows zero recognition when Luffy’s parentage is broadcast in front of him. A real maternal-slot mystery exists; nothing on the published page ties it to Crocodile.

What would change our mind

Named, greppable falsifiers — one per line; future scoring passes grep these against new chapters:

• A canon chapter or databook page showing Crocodile as female, or naming an on-page female-to-male gender change in his past, would revive SC1.
• Ivankov stating on-page that the “weakness/secret” he holds over Crocodile is a gender change (or the Horm-Horm having been used on Crocodile) would revive SC2.
• Any chapter, SBS, or Vivre Card naming Luffy’s biological mother — as Crocodile or as anyone else — would settle SC3/SC4 directly.
• A future beat in which Crocodile shows explicit parental recognition of Luffy (naming him son, referencing having borne him, or a Dragon–Crocodile relationship reveal) would revive SC4.
• A Baterilla / Baltigo / Revolutionary flashback placing Crocodile with Dragon around Luffy’s birth would give SC4 its first on-page purchase.
