The seed
Why it matters
First on-page Vivi-direct-articulation of personal-vendetta against Crocodile. The Ch. 142 composed-in-public / cry-in-private register (8-year-old Vivi controlling her face at the World Council; weeping privately in Igaram’s arms after) is inverted in Ch. 161 — Vivi cries-in-public (in front of the Strawhats) and articulates her hatred aloud. The pivot is the chapter’s emotional climax.
The composition is doing double-work: the gallows-skeleton tableau visually anchors what the kingdom has become (death-by-political-collapse), and Vivi’s tearful curse-out personalizes that visual into an emotional vector. The kingdom-stakes and the personal-vendetta-stakes merge into one resolve beat.
Pre-loads Vivi’s psychological through-line for the Alabasta-saga — every decision forward is anchored to this resolve. The diplomatic-doctrine (Ch. 160 we’re going to reason with him) is now narrower: she will reason with the rebel leader, but she will not reason with Crocodile. The dual-target moral grammar (peace with the rebels, vendetta with Crocodile) is operational from this beat forward.
Forward-canon: the resolve underwrites the I want to fight beat at the Alabasta-arc climax (when Vivi physically attacks BW agents) and the what would Vivi do register Luffy invokes when confronting Crocodile.
