Chapter 1040 intercuts Big Mom’s defeat with a flashback to the dawn of the Great Pirate Era: the old generation curses Roger at his execution (“Hey, Roger. Why’d you have to go and say that?!”) and dreads the day “those kids rise up all over the world… who[‘ll] have to deal with them?!” (pp. 10–12). The “wasted words on young ears” of the title — Roger’s call lit a fire in the youth that the old guard would have to face.

The chapter pays this fear off in the same breath: the “kids,” Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law, topple an Emperor of the Sea (pp. 13–14). Seed for the broader Wano-era reversal in which the Worst Generation overthrows the Yonko.
