The chapter installs the Tashigi-Kuina visual-twin foreshadowing — Tashigi’s design is deliberately mirrors Kuina (Ch. 5-6, 21-22 flashbacks) so that Zoro’s later combat-encounters with her are structurally crippled by face-recognition.
Significance
First on-page composition of Zoro’s unable-to-fight-back psychological block. The block is installed before the proper combat-encounter (which will follow in subsequent Loguetown chapters).
The design-choice is structural, not coincidental. Oda has explicitly designed Tashigi to look like Kuina; the Ch. 96 panel is the visual install of that decision.
Glasses-klutz prop-tell is also installed here — Tashigi drops her own glasses while saving Zoro, then mistakes them for his.
Forward-pattern
Loguetown arc (Ch. 100+) — Tashigi will be revealed as a Marine ensign / Captain-Smoker’s lieutenant; Zoro will refuse to fight her at full force.
Alabasta arc (Ch. 156+, 215+) — every Tashigi encounter governed by Zoro’s can’t-fight-Kuina’s-face register.
Punk Hazard arc (Ch. 654+) — Tashigi’s body-swapped form lets Zoro accidentally fight her at full force; the body-vs-face dissociation is the arc’s compositional pivot.
Forward-canonical: the Tashigi-Shimotsuki-Village lineage reveal (the Shimotsuki clan connection that explicitly makes Tashigi and Kuina from the same lineage).
