The seed
The very first Ancient Weapon named in the series is glossed on-page as named for a god — and not just any god, the god of death. This is Oda telling the reader, in-text, that the weapon-names are load-bearing.
The reading
Pluto / Plouton (Hades) rules the underworld and the earth’s buried mineral wealth (Gk Ploutos = ‘riches’ — the treasure under the ground). This double-codes Pluton precisely:
- a metal war-machine (mineral wealth of the underworld),
- that sleeps underground / is buried (Pluto’s domain is what lies beneath the earth) — confirmed forward-canon: the battleship is buried under Wano,
- with death/extinction-scale firepower (god of death; island-vaporizing).
The weapon is one of a god-named triad keyed to the three domains:
| Weapon | God | Domain | Binding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pluton | Pluto/Hades | underworld / earth / death | buried warship, island-erasing cannon |
| Poseidon | Poseidon | sea | being who commands the Sea Kings (Shirahoshi) |
| Uranus | Uranus | sky / heavens | sky-borne weapon Imu fires on Lulusia |
earth(underworld) → sea → sky = death → ocean → heaven. The closed cosmological set is itself a seed: the three are repeatedly theorized to act in concert (to sink or save the world).
The payoff
(Forward-canon — pending. The full reveal of Pluton’s nature/wielder, and any explicit narrative confirmation that the god-names map to combined earth/sea/sky function, remains open.)
Earliest known caller
The god-of-death gloss is Oda’s own (Ch. 0193).
Why this matters
This is the anchor case for the Ancient-Weapon-names-encode-the-weapon pattern: when Oda hands you a proper noun and then has a character explain what god it’s named for, the god’s mythological domain is a spec sheet for the weapon. Generalizes to Poseidon (sea → Sea-King command) and Uranus (sky → orbital/sky strike).
