The seed
Dr. Hogback is genial and self-aggrandizing — fawning over a fellow doctor, Tony Tony Chopper — right up until Chopper asks to see his laboratory, at which point his face turns cold and he declares “No one… may look at my laboratory. EVER. ” A flagged secret space: the surgeon who openly researches “reviving the dead” guarding the one room he will not show is a Chekhov’s-lab tell.

Hogback’s off-limits laboratory is revealed as the heart of the Thriller Bark zombie operation — the surgical workshop where the island’s corpses are reanimated. Why this matters
