• Oda profile-photo neck-injury gag: A reader complains that Oda tried to look at his own profile and could hurt his neck, and asks him to “value his life more.” Oda: “You’re right… I’m sorry.” Continues the Vol. 7 one-mirror-profile-self-view recurring gag — another reader sprained their neck attempting it. Oda: “Then you’re one of US.”

• Fullbody name etymology — canonized: A reader notices a wine label saying ‘dry, full body’ and asks if that’s the origin of Lt. Fullbody’s name. Oda: “I won’t [deny it], that’s exactly it! I don’t drink much alcohol so I don’t know a lot about wine, but it seems that the depth of flavor is called body! Strong wines aged for a long time are said to have ‘full’ body. Lighter wines are said to have ‘medium’ or ‘light’ body. And that’s where Lt. Fullbody’s name comes from!” The Baratie-arc-naming-pattern (food-and-drink-language as character-name) extends from cooks to Marines who appeared at the Baratie.

• Gin weapon-concealment Q (joke deflection): A reader asks where Gin was hiding his weapon — “Was it ‘down there’?” Oda: “What?! Are you insinuating that the weapon was hidden between Gin’s legs?! He wouldn’t do a thing like that. Gin’s fans are gonna be mad at you—and he’s very popular.” Oda-deflects-with-character-defense register.

Q2 — Why did “Red-Shoes” Zeff eat his right foot? Wouldn’t he have been smarter to eat his left foot? A2 — “Bzzzz. That’s wrong, actually. The plant foot is the foundation of a strong kick. How could you kick a ball with your right foot if you had no left foot to stand on? You couldn’t! Ask a friend who plays soccer. A good hard kick depends on the foot that supports your weight!!” — paratextual canon for the Ch. 68 right-foot-eaten reveal: the choice was technical (preserve the plant foot for kick-power), not random. • Reader-takeover gag (Timmy Ueda of the SBS Takeover Gang): Reader announces “I’m going to begin the SBS Question Corner before you do, Oda Sensei!! SBS will now begin!!” Oda response: “Agh! Oh no, you did it! Darn you, Timmy. Now I can’t do it! Well, I guess it’s already begun.” — a reader hijacks the SBS opener.

• Find Panda Man puzzle (Vol 8 page 92 canonized): Reader asks where Find Panda Man on page 92 of Vol 8 is hidden. Oda confirms the puzzle was intentional: “I got a lot of postcards about that. […] Inside the lower circle, it does indeed say, ‘Find Panda Man!!!’ And Panda Man can be seen in the circle at the upper right.” Includes a diagram of the Baratie sinking-boat panel — Panda Man making a peace sign.

  • Find Panda Man canonized as a Where’s-Waldo Oda-running-gag mechanic — Oda intentionally hides Panda Man (and explicit “Find Panda Man” text) in background panels. The Vol. 6 SBS Panda Man introduction is re-confirmed here in operation.
