Why this matters
The Zoan three-stage rule (Human / Hybrid / Animal) is the foundational taxonomic baseline against which every subsequent Zoan in the series is measured. Stated here only to be immediately broken by Chopper’s Rumble Ball (p. 9: “After five years of research, I discovered four more transformations!!!”), the rule itself becomes a permanent reference frame:
- SMILE fruits’ failure to follow the rule (Wano arc) is structurally legible only because the baseline is established here.
- Marco’s mythical-bird phoenix form breaks the rule by adding a Mythical-Zoan-only fourth tier (regenerative flames).
- Kaidou’s heraldic dragon transforms in ways that violate the three-stage baseline (full-body cloud-cover variation, lightning-mode).
- Lucci’s CP9 leopard in early Skypiea-adjacent demonstrations is shown adhering to the rule, anchoring CP9 as canonical Zoans against later violations.
- Awakened Zoans (Lucci forward-canon, Kaidou) modify their environment as well as their body — a wholly new mode introduced by breaking the rule’s per-body-only baseline.
The Drum arc is therefore the install chapter for an entire class of forward-canon lore. The rule is stated to be broken — Oda’s standard lore-rule-as-bar-to-clear grammar (see Chopper Seven-Form Zoan Breaks Three-Stage Limit for the same pattern viewed from Chopper’s side).
