The seed
Wapol reaches Drum Castle and finds it abandoned (“WAPOL’S… GONE!!! …GONE!!!”, p. 2). Castle-front big-panel: a snow-mantled multi-spire fortress, untouched but empty. Wapol’s stair-rage face: “Is this my Drum Castle!? What happened!!? …What have they done… to my castle!!!” (p. 4). The tableau echoes Ch. 135 in geometry but inverts it thematically: the same king, the same kingdom — now visibly without subjects.
The payoff
Why this matters
The Drum arc’s central political thesis lands as visual composition before any character articulates it. The kingdom-without-subjects tableau is the load-bearing image: a crown is meaningless without a people, and the only legitimacy in monarchy comes from the consent of the governed. Pre-loads the arc-climax (Wapol decisively expelled, the kingdom renamed Sakura Kingdom under Dalton’s leadership). Pairs with the Ch. 134 Wapol abandoned the nation canonization — the king who abandoned them returns to find that they have, in turn, abandoned him.
