Status: confirmed (visual mirror) · Technique: visual-silhouette · negative-space · label-panel-grammar Ch 977 p. 16-17 (six feet in silhouette) ↔ Ch 978 p. 15-17 (the six named individually under formal caption-cards) — the withheld-silhouette → formal-roster-label-card pair, one chapter apart, naming the Flying Six as a coordinated command tier.

The seed

The chapter closes on a negative-space silhouette tease: a row of legs, hakama-hems and boots rendered as flat black shapes over the festival stone floor, with “KTOK KTOK” footstep SFX and the caption “THE TOBI ROPPO… …HAVE ARRIVED!!” (p. 16), then a second feet-only panel as Kaido bellows “SEND THEM IN!!!” (p. 17). Six figures are present-and-counted (“Master Kaido, all six of the Tobi Roppo are present!!”) but no member is identified — the silhouette withholds every face, costume and power. The feet-only framing is the cliffhanger: the reader knows an elite six has assembled, but not who.

The payoff

One chapter later (chapter title: “Introducing the Tobi Roppo”), the withheld silhouette is fully resolved into the antagonist officer-roster label-card grammar. Each of the six gets a formal one-line caption-card nameplateWHO’S-WHO / PAGE ONE / ULTI (p. 16), SASAKI / X. DRAKE / BLACK MARIA (p. 17) — as the squad is shown lounging together as a single elite unit on the festival platform, the lower-left “TOBI ROPPO / PIRATES” band tagging the whole roster. The same six feet that were anonymous shapes a chapter earlier are now archetype-perfect full-figure renders, each stamped with the proper-name caption that marks a named antagonist of operational weight.

The mirror (shared invariants)

  1. Same six bodies, withheld → revealed — the negative-space feet (977) are literally the legs of the figures the 978 cards name. The silhouette is the redaction; the label-card is the reveal.
  2. Roster, not solo — both panels field the Flying Six as one consolidated unit (the counted-and-assembled silhouette → the line-up shown bickering together), not six separate coronations.
  3. Formal caption-card nameplate per member — the one-line {NAME} card (WHO’S-WHO, PAGE ONE, ULTI, SASAKI, X. DRAKE, BLACK MARIA) is the invariant nameplate slot of the villain label-panel grammar, here deployed as a squad roster rather than a single-figure splash.
  4. Negative-space typography doing the work — KTOK-KTOK footstep SFX in the silhouette’s negative space (977) → the proper-name caption-cards floated into the panels’ negative space (978).

Why this matters

This is the Beasts-Pirates instance of the antagonist officer-ROSTER label-card grammar — the multi-figure cousin of the single-officer reveal card Oda used for King and Jack. The roster-splash lineage runs Baroque Works’ officer sketch-cover (Baroque Works Full Officer Roster Visual Splash Reveal) → the Germa princes’ team-deployment (Germa 66 Team-Deployment Splash Consolidates The Vinsmoke Label-Splash Grammar) → Big Mom’s pursuit-daughters (Big Mom Daughters Battle-Deployment Lineup Mirrors The Germa Squad-Splash Grammar) → the Tobi Roppo here, the first time the Beasts Pirates’ elite Headliners are catalogued as a single roster rather than introduced one Calamity at a time.

When the redaction is a group silhouette (not a single mystery figure, cf. the Kuro name-withhold negative-instance), expect a roster reveal — line-abreast or lounging-as-a-unit — rather than a solo coronation. One instance of the broader Panel-Composition Quotation Technique.
