The seed

In Norse myth (Grímnismál st. 38, Poetic Edda), Svalinn (“the cooling one”) is the shield the Æsir place before the sun (Sól) so that the world — mountain and sea — will not burn up. Oda gives the Elbaf giants a sword-and-shield combo named for exactly that shield, and has them raise it on a burning island to protect the Sun God. The name does the work the panel does not say aloud: the giants are cast as the mythic shield that stands before the sun. (The paired finisher “Skilja Split” — Old Norse skilja, “to cleave/separate” — keeps the Norse register; the Norse-coding line runs through “Hakoku Sovereignty” and “Divine Departure” too.)
