Why it matters
The named-attack-as-character-signature convention — established for Luffy’s Gomu Gomu vocabulary (Pistol/Rocket/Whip/Bazooka) and now extended for Zoro’s Santoryu vocabulary — is one of Oda’s foundational character-development devices. Each named attack is simultaneously a combat upgrade and an identity marker: the vocabulary grows with the character. Tracking the named-attack vocabulary across arcs is one of the simplest combat-power-curve diagnostics available in the series.
The Onigiri (Ch. 17) → Tora Gari (Ch. 33) pattern, both delivered as single-stroke lieutenant-class finishers, also reinforces the Zoro-resolves-lieutenant-class-opposition-in-one-named-move combat-role rule that Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern is tracking. The named-attack vocabulary and the combat-role pattern are coupled: the named attack is the role-execution.

- name-etymology — Tora Gari (虎狩り) literally “tiger-hunt”; consistent with Oda’s animal/food/martial-arts pun convention. The tiger coding is martial-arts referent (the tora-gari draw-and-strike has roots in iaijutsu nomenclature). Companion to the Onigiri demon-coding — the named techniques are both a martial-arts vocabulary and an iconography vocabulary.
What this seeds
- Named-Santoryu vocabulary — every Zoro arc going forward adds named techniques. Tora Gari itself recurs through the Baroque Works arc and beyond as one of Zoro’s most-used techniques. The vocabulary is the trackable diagnostic of Zoro’s combat-power curve.
- Santoryu-as-system — the page-13 philosophy line (wielding three swords ≠ following the three-sword technique) reframes Santoryu from stance to system and primes the eventual Mihawk-training arc, the Asura-form revelation (Thriller Bark), and the Enma-mastery beat (Wano). The technique-philosophy is being supplied alongside the dream-statement.
