Kuma's Bargain Spare The Crew For The Captain's Head

The seed
At Thriller Bark, the Warlord Kuma offers the exhausted crew a bargain — “Give me the head of Straw Hat Luffy. In exchange… I will spare your lives” (pp. 17-18). The crew refuses unanimously (“Never!!!!”). A Warlord formally putting the captain’s life on the table, against a crew that will not trade him, is the explicit set-up for a crew-member-sacrifice resolution in the immediately following chapters.
The payoff

Why this matters
An explicit on-page ultimatum (“the captain’s head, or all your lives”) is Oda’s chekhov-explicit device: a stated either/or that the immediately following chapters MUST resolve. The crew’s refusal pre-loads the loyalty-as-mutual-sacrifice doctrine that recurs across the series; here it forces the vice-captain’s silent self-sacrifice.
