Ch. 1092 pp. 9–10 — the reluctant assassin
Kizaru states plainly that he has known Vegapunk “a long, long time” and “I don’t want to kill him, obviously!!” (pp. 9–10), yet he carries out the assassination order against his will — even asking Luffy to “stay out of this” and noting he’d “rather not hurt any acquaintances… outside of my mission parameters” (p. 14). A planted emotional tension between duty and an old friendship.
Ch. 1124 pp. 6–7 — the friendship dramatized, and the grief
Flashback to Borsalino and Vegapunk’s first meeting establishes a decades-long bond; young Vegapunk’s line “Have you ever killed a close friend?” lands with grim irony on the man who would be ordered to kill him. In the present, after carrying out the order, a shattered Kizaru lashes out at Sakazuki and murmurs “I’m sorry, brother…” — the reluctant executioner mourning. The chapter title is “Close Friend.”
