The seed
Igarappoi self-introduces with a full splash-panel label-card:
IGARAPPOI, MAYOR OF WHISKY PEAK . Tall, bald, swirly-pince-nez,
dark coat with white collar, brass wind-instrument always in his
right hand. Speaks with comedic musical interjections (AHEM!♪ /
MI-MI-MI♪ ) between sentences. Proposes “a celebration in your honor”
and waves off Nami’s tactical “how long will it take to log this
island?” question (page 19) with “Please set aside such trivial
matters!”
The label-panel-villain-grammar (proper-noun + role-title splash) is the
same grammar Oda has used for Kuro, Krieg, Mihawk, Arlong, etc. — a
structural tell that this character is not what he appears . The
musical-instrument-as-speech-prop is the secondary tell.
The payoff
Ch. 107 —
Mr. 8 codename self-revealed; saxophone-shotgun fired (IGARAPPA!!! ); musical-instrument-as-weapon prop-tell confirmed-in-debut
Page 9 — silhouette debut against the rising moon with the caption-label IGARAPPOI A.K.A. MR. 8 — first on-page self-reveal of the Mr. 8 Baroque-Works codename. Mr. 9: “You’re a poet… Mr. 8!” (page 8). Page 17 — Igarappoi reflexively fires his saxophone (BRUPOW POW POW PE / IGARAPPA!!! ) and the wide-cone shotgun-blast hits his own teammates (GAAAGH!! ). The Ch. 106 musical-instrument-as-speech-prop-as-secondary-tell is confirmed-in-debut as a wide-cone shotgun weapon . Etymology: Igarappoi + IGARAPPA! = wordplay on igareru (be hoarse) / iga (chestnut burr — spiky, scatter-shot) — the wind-instrument-as-shotgun is encoded in the character’s own name.
Forward-pattern : every later Baroque-Works numbered-agent has a prop-tell-encoded-weapon (Mr. 5 / Bomb-Bomb, Miss Valentine / Kilo-Kilo, Mr. 2 / Clone-Clone, Mr. 1 / Supa-Supa, etc.). The Ch. 107 install canonizes the prop-tell-encodes-weapon doctrine for the entire Baroque-Works officer-roster reveal cascade.
Ch. 110 —
TRUE-IDENTITY REVEAL LANDS HERE, NOT CH. 0114 —
Igaram is his true name. Igarappoi is his assumed name (editor’s note) +
Commander of the Royal Guard of the Kingdom of Alabasta self-identification
Page 12-13 — Editor’s note: IGARAM IS HIS TRUE NAME. IGARAPPOI IS HIS ASSUMED NAME. —ED. First on-page utterance of the name Igaram . Page 13 — Igaram self-identifies: “ON MY HONOR AS COMMANDER OF THE ROYAL GUARD OF THE KINGDOM OF ALABASTA!” — first canonical rank-and-affiliation declaration. The triple-disguise (Mr. 9 disguise-side, Mr. 8 senior-officer-side, Igarappoi mayor-front-side) collapses to the true-identity Igaram, Alabasta Royal Guard Commander at this single panel. Page 19 — begs Sanji and Zoro to escort Vivi to Alabasta, offering reward: “Please escort my princess to Alabasta, a great kingdom in the far east!” The escort-contract premise is canonized in the same beat as the true-identity reveal. The Ch. 0114 reveal mentioned in earlier versions of this note was a forward-projection — the actual reveal lands Ch. 0110. Igaram is now triply-confirmed: Mr. 8 (Ch. 0107) → Royal Guard Commander identity (Ch. 0110) → forward Alabasta-saga full deployment.
Igarappoi is revealed to be Captain
Igaram, head of the Alabasta royal guard, escorting Princess Vivi
undercover (the true-identity reveal beyond the Mr. 8 codename).
The Igarappoi name is a curly-mustache + onomatopoeic-
trumpet pun encoding Igaram’s combat-style. Note : Per the actual on-page text in Ch. 0110, the true-identity reveal lands at Ch. 0110 not Ch. 0114. The Ch. 0114 register is the full Whisky-Peak-arc-resolution payoff (escort-contract execution, decoy-ship sacrifice, etc.); the identity-reveal itself is Ch. 0110.
Why this matters
Igarappoi is the prototype of the Oda welcome-front antagonist :
a label-panel-introduced friendly local whose label-panel is itself
the structural tell of villain-status. Forward-pattern: every later
too-friendly-local-is-the-villain beat (Skypiea’s Conis-and-Pagaya
initial-friendliness with the Enel-hidden-behind-them layer, Dressrosa’s
Doflamingo-as-beloved-king beat, Water-7’s Iceburg-as-friendly-mayor beat)
re-keys to this Ch. 106 install — except in Igarappoi’s case, the
inversion is triple : he is (a) not just a mayor, (b) not just a
Baroque-Works-agent, but (c) actually Vivi’s protector — a triple-layer
disguise that makes him an ally once unmasked.
