Gear Second On-Page Debut Steam-Body Self-Pump Speed-Tier
Status: pending · Technique: chekhov-explicit / name-etymology
The seed
On the courthouse roof, mid-fight with Blueno , Luffy crouches, pumps his own blood at high speed , his body emits steam (“His body is steaming?!”; “all my abilities have evolved to the next level”), and names the technique on-page — “Gear… Second!! ” This is the first appearance of any “Gear” technique in the series.
Ch. 388 — “something even MORE interesting… Gear…” (named-but-undelivered higher tier) + the boost’s cost
Mid-fight, Luffy proposes an escalation beyond Gear Second — “Then I’ll show you something even MORE interesting!! … Gear… Watch this.” (p. 12) — then collapses from exhaustion before naming or showing it (p. 13). This is the second on-page beat of the numbered-Gear ladder: an ordinal-implied higher tier is explicitly teased but withheld, and the technique’s cost (the user left unable to move once the boost fades) is established here for the first time. Reinforces the chekhov-explicit reading that “Second” pre-loads further tiers. Cross-link Gomu Gomu no Mi .
Ch. 418 — Gear Second re-activated (repeatable state) + the full “Jet” moveset named
Opening the climactic Luffy -vs-Lucci duel, Luffy re-activates Gear Second (“Gear… Two!!”, pp. 14–15) — the second on-page activation after the Ch. 387 debut, establishing it as a repeatable power state rather than a one-off — and chains the “Jet” moveset on-page (Jet Whip p. 16, Jet Bazooka p. 18, plus base-form Yellow Lotus p. 10 / Jet Pistol p. 13). Strong corroborating evidence for the numbered-Gear-ladder reading; status STAYS pending — the ladder pays off forward (Gear Third ~0403+, Gear Fourth ~784+, the Gear 5 awakening Ch. 1044 ). Ch. 421 — Gear THIRD debuts in combat (the ladder’s second rung)
Luffy names and demonstrates “Gear… Three!! ” against Lucci (the first Gear-Third use in active combat — the Ch. 403 debut was a door-breaker utility use): a giant-scale state made by blowing air into his bones (“Bone Balloon!! ”; “The air’s moving through my bones, picking up power!!”, pp. 15-17), finishing with Gum-Gum Giant Pistol (pp. 17-19) through the Tower of Law. Direct chekhov-explicit confirmation that “Gear” is a numbered escalating system — the ordinal “Second” of Ch. 387 pre-loaded a “Third.” Status STAYS pending — the system’s terminal payoff (the Gear 5 awakening Ch. 1044 ) is forward of this window. Lucci also names Gear Second’s cost here — “you used up your strength with that fuel injection” (p. 13) — reinforcing the boost-cost beat of Ch. 388 . Cross-link Luffy , Rob Lucci , Gomu Gomu no Mi .
The ordinal “Second” implies a numbered system the instant it is spoken — a Chekhov name that pre-loads Gear Third (giant-bone inflation), Gear Fourth (Boundman / Snakeman / Tankman), and finally the Gear 5 awakening Ch. 1044 , where the rubber fruit is revealed as the Mythical Zoan Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika . The steam / blood-pump mechanic shown here is also the visual template Oda reuses to telegraph each subsequent tier (cf. the inhale-then-name-call-then-inflate grammar of the Ch. 15 Gum-Gum Balloon, already noted in Gomu Gomu no Mi ).
Why this matters
The on-page steam/blood-pump physics also retroactively descend from the Ch. 15 Balloon air-modulation grammar — Oda installs the gesture vocabulary hundreds of chapters before he scales it. Cross-link Gomu Gomu no Mi , Six Powers (Rokushiki) .
