Frankys Body Runs On Fuel Refuel Mechanic Tell
Status: confirmed · Technique: chekhov-explicit, prop-tell · Payoff: Ch. 404
The seed
After the Coup de Vent, Franky deflates — “…used up all my fuel. Just look at my limp pompadour.” — and stops chasing the crew, promising “I’ll erase him next time, once I’ve refueled.” (p. 18). First on-page tell that the cyborg’s power is gated by a consumable fuel resource, which later resolves into the cola mechanic (and the visual gag of his hair/strength reflecting fuel level).
The payoff
(Earlier forward-canon note: the mechanic also recurs in the “I’m outta cola” gag and later Thriller Bark fuel beats; the @0404 pantry fight is the first time it decides a combat exchange on-page.)
Earliest known caller
(Unknown.)
Why this matters
A consumable-resource power-gate planted as a comedy tell (the limp pompadour) that becomes load-bearing combat/plot mechanics later — Oda’s prop-tell playbook. Cross-link Franky.
